Behind every great supermodel is a team of people to ensure she goes down the runway looking like a million bucks. Part of that team is the makeup artist, entrusted with the task of making beautiful women look even better and Eric Sakas is one of the finest. He has been creating runway-ready looks for over 16 years, working with some of the best known in the industry—both in beauty and in fashion.
“Makeup is not rocket science and it’s not meant to be,” says Eric. Having had such extensive experience, he insists that there is not one runway look that you can’t replicate at home. “Yes, some looks are a little more out there than others, but for the most part, they usually are just variations on classic looks.” Eric spent many years working side by side with the late legendary Kevyn Aucoin, helping to found Kevin Aucoin Beauty, and is even readying his own organic beauty product line, Vapour Beauty, due out this month on shopnbc.com. “He was truly a master and cranked out hundreds of looks each year on photo shoots for Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar and for such designers as Ralph Lauren, Isaac Mizrahi, Donna Karan, and Todd Oldham. He was challenged each season with creating unique looks for each designer he worked with.
“All designers look for inspiration,” Eric continues. “They often look to the past for references that help define their collections, and it is the job of the makeup artist—along with the hairstylist—to pull the entire look together and bring the collection to life.
“The top designers prefer to work with artists who can understand their references to interpret the look. A woman on the tundra, the girl about town, country chic, the bohemian. This is part of the creative process. What often happens is that the artist will take a classic look and spin it with a modern twist. Sometimes it is purely classic and others it’s considered a new trend.” While some of the colors may change over time, classic looks will always remain current.
