Having grown up in Houston, Julie Henderson sure knows her way around Space City. These days she lives in Manhattan, though, so she makes it a point to visit her hometown whenever she can. “[Houston] is where I was raised, so all my friends and family are still there.” Modelinia caught up with Julie and she told us about some of the places she makes a point to visit whenever she gets homesick.
EAT
Los Cucos
With authentic Mexican food just South of the Border, Texas’ version is the next best thing. And, of course, Julie has a favorite spot. “Los Cucos is always my first and last meal. It’s yummy, sloppy Mexican food. I always go back and forth between the cheese enchiladas or the tortilla soup with beef tacos. So good!”

Hinze’s Barbeque & Catering
For some good old-fashioned barbecue, Hinze’s has always been a favorite for Julie. “It has amazing baked potatoes stuffed with barbecue. It’s so special to me because there used to only be on in Texas, and we would always stop there on our way to my grandparents’ house.”

CULTURE FIX
Houston Ballet
Maybe it’s just a girl thing, but Julie loves going to the ballet. “I love the ballet, and ever since I was a kid my dad would always take me to see The Nutcracker.”

BEAUTY
Mai’s Nail Perfection
All girls need a good pampering. “There is a great new nail salon that I love,” says Julie. “They treat your feet like you are a porcelain doll. I fall asleep in the chair every time.”

When it comes to shopping, Julie heads to the Galleria—her favorite mall. But for vintage and boutiques, it’s all about Montrose in Houston.

TAKE HOME
A “Don’t Mess with Texas” T-shirt is an essential souvenir to buy before leaving the Lone Star State. “I know it’s cliché, but once you’re there you’ll understand.”
