Trend Report: The '80s Smoky Eye

By Joyann King

The ’80s eyes are back in a new way. Learn how to build the smoldering, shadowy eye seen all over the runways recently.

Thanks to Marc Jacobs’ Louis Vuitton Spring 2009 show, the ’80s are finding their way into your makeup bag! One part punk, one part futuristic, beauties Jessica Stam and Chanel Iman got their wings for the MJ show in the makeup chair backstage—literally. Winged eye shadow lies somewhere between a classic smoky eye and a black eye, so the key to getting this tricky look is to build your shadow slowly. Take a cue from Kate Moss and thinly apply black eyeliner, smudging the entire outline gently. Then brush on a matte dark gray shadow onto your lower lid extending just beyond the corner of the eye into a slight wing. Brush a hint of sparkle on your brow bone and on your inner eye to finish the look. You could also try a tamer version, like Alice Dellal, by making the point more rounded. If you’re feeling less dramatic, opt for silver or neutral hues, but keep the rest of your makeup natural-looking to ensure a modern and fresh look.
