A Lesson in Erin Wasson

Monday’s are good days for lessons. So today’s lecture is on Erin Wasson. While you may think you know all about this surfer/model/designer/stylist/editor/etcetera, here are some new facts to learn.

She’s a major tattoo lover. Some of her multiple tats include:

  • Phrases that read: “Taking care of business,” “This heart will start a riot in me,” and “Distant traveler” in Hawaiian
  • A line of “earrings” on her left lobe
  • And one that’s even gone missing from her heel

Righteous is a word that often comes out of her mouth in her Orange County draw.

She wears a tiny diamond band on her ring finger, and says she has a lot of love in her life.

Her third-floor apartment: Alexander Wang’s fifth-floor apartment:: her style: his show.

As a designer, she’s itching to show off a certain type of woman. “You know, you put on a dress and say, ‘Who is this girl?’ Then you get on set and say, ‘Okay, how do I project this woman? Where has she been? Where’s she going?’ It was up to you to relate some sort of message in a stagnant image. With clothing, and with designing, you’ve got 40 opportunities to project that.”

And this season she’s showing at the Tents, with an emphasis on her pet. “This season, my color palette is based on my dog,” she said. “I have a pit bull named Cream, and there’s something about the monochromaticness of the pink around his nose and his coat. That’s kind of where I started with the color thing. And going back to that whole idea of being on this personal journey, my life, and making so many changes in me, and figuring out where I’m at and where I want to be.

As a surfer, she totally relates with the mentality. “I always say the paddle-out’s a bitch, but the ride’s amazing. It’s a good metaphor for life.”
