A Little Paris in New York

There was something of Paris in the air last night as the art and fashion worlds converged at the opening of “The Martus Maw,” an exhibition of new works by French artist Nicolas Pol. Budding curator Vladimir Restoin-Roitfeld presented the show, which will be on display from November 10 through December 10 at 80 Essex Street, an old meat market that proved the perfect space for Nicolas’ seductively grotesque oeuvre.

A DJ spun classic rock jams and incense smoke mingled with cigarette fumes as guests admiring the art traversed the concrete floor from canvas to canvas. Carine Roitfeld showed up on the arm of Jean Paul Gaultier, Giovanna Battaglia on the arm of the Sartorialist, Scott Schuman, while art lovers like Olivier Zahm and Daphne Guinness cruised the party solo.

Amidst all the compelling personalities, we were still on the lookout for models, and no sooner had we spotted Erin Wasson did we bump into the glorious Caroline Winberg. When asked about the exhibit, the statuesque Swede sung nothing but praise. “I think it’s amazing,” she said, and pointed to a painting. “Incredible…the lighting they did is genius.”

Of course, we couldn’t attend an art opening without congratulating the artist. After explaining how models are our muses, Modelinia asked Nicolas what inspires his incredible work. “Myself,” he uttered easily. “I try not to think too much about art.” Spoken like a true Frenchman. ~ Tim Mitchell
