When street-style fashion bloggers and photographers first started snapping pics of models off the runways and out of the spotlights, the industry couldn’t get enough of those candid, off-duty moments that gave us a glimpse into their personal style. Unlike the glossy, industry styled spreads found in fashion magazines, these street-style snaps caught fashion’s leading ladies in the outfits they coordinated to reflect their mood and personality outside of the world of role-playing in which they work. As off-hand as these photos may be though, photographer Annemarieke van Drimmelen found a way to take it even one step further, shooting some of fashion’s top faces in their own environments and dressed in their own attire.
Stripped of color, sartorial paraphernalia, and even their clothes on occasions, Van Drimmelen documented an inside look into the private lives of models like Saskia de Brauw and Sara Blomqvist to create a portrait of beauties at rest for Nowness.com.
As a former model turned photographer, Van Drimmelen can relate to the relationship between ‘artifice and authenticity,’ that provoked the intimate photo shoot.
“Models are of course used to stepping into the role of a character for a shoot,” said Van Drimmelen. “Some girls do that in an amazing way. Bringing the camera to their personal life took away the role that they knew and opened up something else.”
For this latest venture, Van Drimmelen took the opportunity to ‘blur the line between documentary and fashion portraiture’ in a way that truly captures the natural beauty and grace of the high-fashion ladies we love to watch both on and off the runways.
