Artistic Brilliance from Amber Valletta & Steven Klein

The line between art and fashion continues to be blurred everyday. Alexander McQueen’s exhibit at the Met felt far more like an artist installation than a display of the designer’s life of work, Rodarte’s Spring 2012 collection featured an array of Van Gogh printed pieces, and Steven Klein’s editorial spread “One For the Ages” featuring Amber Valletta in W’s September issue felt like a mash up of artistic genius. Although the editorial was released months ago, Klein also created a series of 10 slow moving films that were featured at an exhibition during New York Fashion Week. The videos, which were just recently released online, show Amber Valleta gradually aging from her mid 20s to 120 years old in a single room. “It is the story of a woman; a woman reflecting forwards and backwards in time. She ages in a non surgical way,” remarked Klein. “This is the character: I chose to put her in one room so you could see her metamorphosis, without seeing the room change. This is a journey of a woman.”

While most editorials put as much focus on fashion as the story line, this spread is cored around Klein’s vision and Amber’s transformative abilities. Of course the fashion featured in the shoot is beautiful, but it hardly holds a candle to the genius created by Amber and Klein.
