Fashion industry insider Camilla Morton jumped right into the throes of New York Fashion Week and will be guest-blogging for Modelinia all week long.
Diane von Furstenberg kicked off my Fashion Week with a show that featured the United Nations of Beauty: peacocks in the front row, swans on the runway. The backdrop at DVF was a temple, and Bryant Park became a summer oasis as Debussy as well Madonna’s “Erotica” played on the soundtrack with Kendra Spears opening the show in a berry-shade swimsuit.
With twists of leaves adorning the girls’ hair, Pre-Raphaelite mixed with Amazonian queens. From 1920s georgettes to crocheted dresses, intricate embroidery, beading, and soft-rouched African-inspired prints, Diane caught the sunshine in these clothes (perfect for the demigoddess as much as she could set off the red carpet, or dare we mention the mere mortal, her most devoted fan?). The rainbow-hue beads swung happily from one dress, Anna Cleveland rocked a beautiful print on another mini, while Sessilee Lopez and Rose Codero were among my favorite faces on the runway.
It was hard to decide, as DVF’s golden girls made their finale lap, what—or who—was better: the gold mesh dress and Abbey Lee Kershaw’s ethereal beauty, or the gold-beaded leather harem skirt and Arlenis Sosa’s megawatt smile? Diane came on to do her lap of honor, and her granddaughter leapt on stage with delight (a fashionista in training at the tender age of 6).
When the lights went up, models went one way, the press the other. I stayed rooted in my Manolos as you only had a split second to choose which eye of the needle you would try and pass through as editors and egos crowd-surfed to reach the exit to get to the next show. Fashion Week, I have missed this madness… ~ Camilla Morton
