Celebrating Haskins

You know the Cowboy Kate image—it’s an iconic shot. Helena Christensen even has a signed copy in her apartment.

But did you know that the photographer, Sam Haskins, has produced a new book of his images in two editions? And that one edition was created with Tommy Hilfiger? Fashion Etcetera: Standard Edition and Fashion Etcetera: Tommy Hilfiger Special Edition take a look at the 50 years of creativity from Sam, and marks the end of a two-decade dry spell of books from the photographer. It will be available in September—just in time for Fashion Week—and will be celebrated at Milk Gallery from September 17 through October 26.

“As a rule, similar projects seldom evolved into such a broad collaboration as this one with Tommy Hilfiger,” said Haskins of the collaboration. “My many prior undertakings with paper mills, camera manufacturers and such usually did not amount to much more than producing a calendar and an exhibition. I had simultaneous offers for collaboration on this project. Since I have admired Tommy’s clothing for many years and his proposal was so overwhelmingly warm and human, there was no contest.”

Cleary the adoration continues from the designer. “The book is well crafted and inspiring—it captures beauty through a witty and creative perspective, and is truly a one-of-a-kind piece of art in and of itself,” said Hilfiger.

The author’s edition retails for $67.50 and will be available from select book stores as well as online, while the Tommy Hilfiger edition sells for $100, which will be available at the designer’s specialty stores and the exhibit.

So what can we look forward to in the latest must-have coffee-table addition? The seven chapters include: Sixties Black & White, Two Cities (Bologna and Barcelona), Calendars, Fashion, Multiple Imagery, Dance, and Apple & Eve. “I decided to produce a book in which I would further explore the many byways of the double-page spread idiom,” said Haskins. “These thoughts led to the genesis of Fashion Etcetera. My son had persuaded me to take a retrospective look at my archive around the theme of fashion and style, and this became an important factor in my choice of the book’s content.” Place your orders now.
