It was a high intensity, high volume start to Fashion Star on NBC last night. The show, hosted by the seemingly ageless and stunning Elle Macpherson, takes its designers through a series of ups and downs, allowing them to present three signature pieces to mentors Jessica Simpson, Nicole Richie, and John Varvatos, while buyers from Macys, Saks, and H&M have the chance to place bids on the collection. And the best part? The winning designs can be purchased as early as the next day.
The first contestant to go home was Australian menswear designer Nicholas Bowes, who managed to offend all the women panelists by saying that he didn’t take their opinions too seriously when it comes to menswear. “We’re running the world right now!” said Simpson, who herself has built a billion dollar fashion brand.
Elle, in a backless, sequin and lace dress, tried to keep things cool, but admitted she was a bit embarrassed by her fellow Aussies’s lippy remarks.
Our favorite design was Orly Shandy’s innovative skirt designs that allow you to zip off a flowy layer to unveil a tight mini. The skirts are retailing for $350 now at Saks. Even better than the design itself were the models keen ability to unzip the top layer while strutting the stage.
There are a number of contestants left, each with wild personalities, so we look forward to a great season of design, and fun fashion intensity.
