When it comes to gorgeous hair on the runway, few can compete with the Victoria’s Secret models. The legs might be genetic, but the locks are totally achievable—no hair extensions required! We love Behati Prinsloo’s easy, no-fuss look. The face of the VS Pink collection and her stylist let you in on the secrets to her chic and simple do. Trust us, anyone can do it.
This season, anything goes in terms of fashion. Mixing high-end pieces with thrift-store finds is all the rage. Tattered jeans and prim blazers with shoulder pads? Of course. Leather jackets paired with floral dresses? Most definitely. Behati said she would wear a ball gown with a leather jacket all the time if she could.
When styling clothes and accessories to get what the Guardian’s fashion editor Jess Cartner-Morley calls “glunge” (a combination of “glamour” and “grunge”), the only rule is, “Why not?” But this leaves hair in limbo: elegant or edgy? At the Victoria’s Secret Pink Nation Party at Indiana University, Behati shared her secrets on how to style her loose waves to achieve the perfect glunge look. It’s bed head minus the flatness. And the best part? It’s effortless to re-create, plus it works on all hair lengths.
For glunge-worthy style, follow these steps from Behati’s hair and makeup artist Colleen Creighton:
- Blow-dry hair.
- Flip hair and spritz with hairspray all over, eighties-style.
- Keep head flipped over and blow dry hair to add volume and texture.
- Standing upright, wind small sections of hair around curling iron (Colleen used a 1 ½” barrel). But here’s the secret: Don’t curl the roots or ends of each section of hair, leave them straight. So start curling a couple of inches away from your roots and don’t wind the ends of the section of hair around the barrel to make curls look less “done.”
- Comb fingers through your hair, scrunching hair at roots and fluffing ends.
- For added texture or to freshen up the look, repeat steps two and three.
But no look is complete without makeup. To keep with the glunge trend, you want to keep your makeup looking natural. Use foundation to cover up redness or blemishes and let your moisturizer do the rest. Behati says she uses a cleanser and moisturizer from Dermalogica. For your eyes, Colleen creates an au naturel smoky look with a wash of shimmery copper and peach eye shadow and applies all over Behati’s eyelids. Then she lightly lines the eyes with M.A.C’s Eye Kohl Pencil in Teddy and applies a creamy blush from Smashbox in Untamed. The must-have mascara? Bare Escentuals Flawless Definition, a new favorite of Colleen’s. She says it fluffs and defines lashes without overwhelming the rest of your face. For daytime, Colleen suggests wearing nude lips, but go for a bold red for a quick and sexy transition into a nighttime look. ~ Adryanna Dillon
