Although we adore imaginative spreads like the Linda Evangelista shoot for Vogue Italia, we have always felt that models are just as beautiful without makeup as with it. With the recent outcry concerning retouching and Britain’s move to ban it, it’s nice to see Harper’s Bazaar doing things au naturel for the September issue.
Peter Lindbergh, who is known for the honesty he conveys in his fashion photography, has really captured the true, honest images of Nadja Auermann, Helena Christensen, Cindy Crawford, Shalom Harlow, Kristen McMenamy, Tatjana Patitz, Claudia Schiffer, and Amber Valletta in this spread, free from computer retouching and cover-ups. Never one for heavy makeup and otherworldly sets, Lindbergh’s photos are the epitome of realism. You’ll remember of course, he took the same approach for Inès de la Fressange and Eva Herzigova on the cover of French Elle.
We especially appreciate that Lindbergh and Bazaar didn’t go for smooth-faced 15-year-olds either. These models are showing a line or two on their faces and look all the more beautiful for it. In fact, it’s inspired us to take a day or two off from the makeup we had previously deemed completely mandatory and go bare just like some of our favorite iconic models. ~ Jane Adams
