Petra Nemcova made a special trip to Port-au-Prince this past week where she was named the latest Goodwill Ambassador at large for Haiti following a ceremony at the national palace. The President of the Republic of Haiti Michel Martley and Prime Minister Lauren Lamothe bestowed the Czech model with the honor as a result of her long-term commitment to rebuilding the country’s schools and supporting the empowerment of Haiti through her work with the nonprofit organization Happy Heart’s Fund, for which Petra is the founder and spokeswomen.
“Petra had already proven her love for the Haitian children by building schools,” said President Martley. “This appointment formalizes her role to advance the well being of my country, a role in which she has my full support.”
In light of Petra’s impact on Haiti’s continued well-being, Prime Minister Lamothe stated, “”It’s a great honor to have such a distinguished personality representing the Haitian people and ensuring the global donor community honors their commitments to our country.”
Following her own harrowing experience with the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, Petra set out just a few months later to establish the HHF, which would commit to restoring hope and opportunity in the lives of children effected by natural disasters. The organization is currently active in nine countries, and has rebuilt a total of 57 schools, helping over 34,412 children and 337,450 community members with 100% of public donations going directly to programs.
Since the 2008 earthquake in Haiti, Petra’s HHF has partnered with the Government of Haiti, the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB), Digicel, J/P Haitian Relief Organization (J/P HRO), Artists for Peace and Justice (APJ), the Stiller Foundation and Prodev.
“It is truly an honor to be of service to the people of a country which I love and that inspires me so much,” said Petra. ”It will be a joy to show the beauty and share the spirit of Haiti with the world. I am proud to represent Haiti internationally with the goal of facilitating the fulfillment of any outstanding pledges, bringing foreign investment and other opportunities towards a brighter future for Haiti.”
