Last night, Elle magazine hosted its fourth annual ‘Women in Music’ celebration at the Edison Ballroom in New York City, including a private concert featuring live performances by four Grammy-winning artists: Kelly Rowland, pop superstar (and “wifey” to Ms. Cara Delevingne) Rita Ora, folksinger Martha Wainwright, as well as one of our personal favorites, DJ Harley Viera-Newton! The certified model/DJ to the fashion crowd was on hand spinning a mix of dance-heavy tracks from her own specially-curated ‘Girl Power’ playlist featuring Robyn, Beyonce and Alicia Keys. Before heading off to her post behind the DJ booth, Harley had the chance to show off her graphic floral printed Versus frock on the pink carpet. It was there that we had the chance to catch up with die-hard music-lover, learning, among other things, that the following that night’s performance she too would be jetting off to Cali to take in the first weekend of the Coachella music festival. Like her fellow model festival goers, Harley is a regular among the Coachella style set, making her a go-to source for a few last minute packing tips! From the go-to festival fashion piece she won’t be leaving home without, to her secret on how to look fresh faced despite the desert heat— not to mention the tunes she’ll have on repeat the whole way where there— here are a few model-approved tips to kick start your Coachella weekend!
My closet is mainly made up of different vintage pieces, so I’ll probably pack a bunch of easy dresses into my bag and sort it out when I get there and see how bad the weather is. I hear it’s supposed to be boiling hot! It should be interesting, so I’m going to keep it light with a dress and comfortable shoes.
I think you just have to keep in minimal and super simple. You can do a great lip using a stain, I like CoverGirl Outlast Lipstain in Scarlet Pucker, it stays put. It’s about keeping things minimal because you don’t want mascara or makeup melting off your face— that’s not a good look.
I love Wild Bell and MS MR. They’re both great breakout bands with females as lead vocalists. “Hurricane”is my favorite off the MS MR album and they’re video just came out and I’m obsessed— it’s a really funny video. Haim, which is another great girl group, just put a great EP that I’ve been listening to a lot. The song “Don’t Save Me” is my favorite!
