Most people aren’t brave enough to venture close to gorillas, but Veronica Varekova is certainly not your average woman. The model and Sports Illustrated beauty was just named Goodwill Ambassador and immediately took off to Rwanda with the African Wildlife Foundation, since 2009 is “The Year of the Gorilla.” During her trip, she not only spent three days with the mountain gorillas, but also learned how to dance and met with members of the community while working in the Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge. But it’s not all playing with gorillas and traveling—Veronica has major work ahead of her. As an ambassador, Veronica’s challenges include raising funds to conserve African landscapes, protecting endangered species, and empowering local communities in AWF’s nine African Heartlands.
