If the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is the Super Bowl of fashion shows, the Victoria’s Secret Angels comprise the starting line. But don’t let skimpy lingerie and fluffy wings fool you; it isn’t easy being an Angel.
An attractive physical appearance is standard, but an attractive personality is essential. Angels have to be highly energetic, alluring, charming, and capable of carrying on a conversation. They are not merely models; they are brand ambassadors, hand-picked from thousands to be international spokespeople for the Victoria’s Secret name. Think the runway is a cakewalk? Try walking on a sleek surface doused in glitter in six-inch heels and heavy wings that come in all varieties, from peacock to butterfly to—ironically—batlike devil. Add that to flashing bulbs, television cameras, and the idea of being broadcast to millions of viewers across the globe and it’s easy for anyone to understand the pressure involved. The fearless Angels take it in stride.
But not every leggy model with a strong back is Angel material, and all of the current girls come with certain credentials that set them ahead of the rest. Before Victoria’s Secret, Marisa Miller was already a Sport’s Illustrated Swimsuit edition all-star. Miranda Kerr, who has been modeling since 13, scored a lucrative cosmetics contract with Maybelline New York. Doutzen Kroes was a high-fashion darling and appeared on the cover of Vogue alongside girls heralded as the World’s Next Top Models. And Alessandra Ambrosio, who won Brazil’s Elite Model Look at a young age, has been working with big names like Revlon, Christian Dior, and Giorgio Armani for years.
They may be strutting the catwalk in tantalizing unmentionables that drive the boys wild, but ultimately—and most importantly—Angels must appeal to the ladies. They are scions of beauty and confidence, meant to inspire women to be strong, sexy, and comfortable with their bodies. An Angel embraces her sexuality and brandishes her curves for everyone to see. Above all else, it’s for this outstanding self-assurance that we love these rare heavenly creatures. ~ Tim Mitchell
