“Flash, dash, cash,” mused Suzy Menkes after the Y-3 Valentine’s Day spectacular at the Park Avenue Armory, words that could not express more perfectly the experience and commercial success the collection is sure to enjoy.
The show began with laser beams and a forward march of seasoned models—stomp after stomp of some of the best girls in the business. Hanne Gaby Odiele, Eniko Mihalik, Anabela Belikova, and Vlada Roslyakova were just a few of the ladies who walked down the lengthy runway with their male model counterparts. Following a brief “intermission” in which a group of models performed a phys-ed style suicide sprint, the presentation resumed, until another group emerged unsheathing red roses to hand to lucky front-row guests. At the end, the designer himself staged a fight with a male model and Freja Beha Erichsen, who walked away victorious.
The audience, which included Coco Rocha and Maggie Rizer, was wowed by the production as well as the covetable clothes that, as always, seamlessly combined street and activewear within the innovative orbit of Yohji Yamamoto’s magic.
After the show, we rode the subway with Pernille Moeller, a Danish beauty known for her killer strut, and found out that preparations weren’t as difficult as one would assume. “We only did one rehearsal,” she admitted. “It took maybe 30 minutes, so it wasn’t that bad.” Imagine that. ~ Tim Mitchell
