Lauren Hanawalt, our model blogger, is here to begin her Model in the City series, starting off with her experience in Paris!
Every trip I go on, there is always one memorable job that sticks out, and Paris holds no exception. When my roommate and I received our casting sheet one day at Ford Paris, it said, “Go to Dior and ask for Pat McGrath.” How exciting! Meeting the best makeup artist in the world was clearly a huge privilege. Not only has she worked with the likes of Steven Meisel, but she is also the mastermind behind some of the biggest shows (Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, and Miu Miu to name a few). Lo and behold, we were meeting Ms. McGrath for Dior’s makeup test.
I never quite understood the extent that labels go to when putting on a show. Apparently, Dior hires hair and makeup to work on several models to test different looks, just to make sure they achieve the perfect look for the show. Who would have thought I would have such an amazing time just being a blank canvas for a makeup artist? She worked on me for two days straight, and the best part was being presented to John Galliano himself. (He said I had an amazing face and a beautiful neck—I was so honored!!) It was amazing to see the lengths people will go for him. As he was feasting on his gourmet meal, the makeup team rushed to turn on the special lights that they brought for the presentation to give “the runway effect.” What a sight to see.
The days were quite long for the models, but even longer for the makeup artists. We wrapped around 6 p.m., but they still had shows or other makeup tests they had to attend to. But Pat is quite amazing. She always kept the environment light and cheery, and I had a blast just hanging out with her and talking about all the latest gossip. She performed probably 15 different makeup tests on me, and not once did I dread being there…. Now that’s the type of people you want to work with!
Hanging with Pat and John in Paris for a couple days, what an experience!
