Lauren Hanawalt, our model blogger, is here to continue her Model in the City series. This time she’s off to Tokyo.
The job of a model is obviously to be a chameleon and to have the ability to transform. You’re expected to be able to change from elegant to grunge, from innocent to seductive. When I was in Tokyo, I did a very exciting job for Nylon Japan, which was oh so transformative. The theme of the shoot was denim-style, inspired by today’s female musicians. I rocked the neon look inspired by M.I.A., impersonated Lily Allen, and even tried to hold my own as a rebel Amy Winehouse. It was one of those shoots where I really got into character. Usually I’m so used to maintaining a consistent mood or feeling for an editorial. Nylon Japan was different because I was required to evoke so many different mannerisms. The Lily Allen look required more femininity than the harder, somewhat sullen Amy Winehouse look. I had a blast. How many people can say “Yeah, at work today I had fake tattoos drawn allover me while wearing a beehive three-feet tall?” The funniest part of the day had to be walking home. Not every day do you see a girl walking through Tokyo with fake tats and a way-more-than-necessary amount of liquid eyeliner. Oh, the stares that I received.
