It may have started with Christian Louboutin’s Rollerball flats, or perhaps it was Chloe’s Susanna leather ankle boots? We may not be able to pinpoint exactly when it began, but by 2008 boots, bags, and jackets studded to the max had become the ultimate model-off-duty staple. Channeling the DIY style of the punk rock scene, designers like Alexander Wang and Burberry turned out studded looks that had major street-cred. The hardware heavy styles have had surprising staying power and no one has turned their back on them yet. The newest incarnation of the stud trend is the “lady-like spike.” These studded accessories are now more girly than grunge, as even Valentino has taken its prim and proper pink leather sandals and given them serious flair with gold square studs. The long, elegant shape has also been a favorite of designers like Eddie Borgo, whose rose-gold and swarovksi crystaled creations have been worn by style setter, Anja Rubik.
