We still have a few days to go until Fashion Week officially begins, but the models are already hard at work running about the city for those final casting calls. We just had to get in on the action, so we made a little trip down to Nicole Miller’s showroom, where we got to peek in on Nicole and her team as they selected the lucky ladies who will walk the runway show this Friday at Lincoln Center. While taking a break from the model mayhem, we sat down with the hands-on designer to talk models and Fashion Week prep before her Spring 2013 show inspired by natural elements and digital technologies. Although the final model selection is still in the works, Nicole did share three of the top picks that have her really excited — models Xiaomeng Huang, Chloe Norgaard, and Ruby Jean Wilson! And, just how did these three stunners land at the top of Nicole’s list? See the exclusive interview with the designer below for a look at what it takes to walk the walk at Fashion Week!
Modelinia: How do you go about choosing the models that will walk in your show? Are there certain criteria?
Nicole Miller: “Walk. Number one is walk. With some of these girls, there may be buzz about them, but if they can’t walk… We had two girls come in earlier today and they just walked like goddesses! They were the best walks we saw all day. Some of the girls we’ve used before, and they walk pretty well. And you need good energy.”
Modelinia: Do you use a lot of the same girls season to season?
Nicole Miller: “Yeah, we’ll use girls that have walked for us before. Also, it’s about body type. Body type is important. I don’t like girls that are too thin. We really do try to stay away from the girls that are really unhealthy.
Modelinia: Who is your all-time model muse?
Nicole Miller: Twiggy!
Modelinia: Do you have plans to celebrate once the show is over on Friday?
Nicole Miller: “Yeah, we’re going to Pulqueria, it’s one of my favorite restaurants. We’re going to have margaritas and tacos!
