Wes Anderson’s films can make hardcore fashionistas long for the wardrobes of his female characters with almost the same intensity that they crave the newest Isabel Marant accessories. His most recent project, Moonrise Kingdom does not disappoint. In fact we can already picture models like Alana Zimmer and Cara Delevingne sporting these retro-chic styles!
Set in woodsy Rhode Island in 1965, the romance between a beautiful book-lover and a determined khaki scout unfolds as they make their runaway journey across the countryside. The film reminds us of the feeling of freedom that comes with summertime, the innocence and playfulness of youth-and how much we want to be in Anderson’s wardrobe department. Every detail of the film is styled, right down to the stationary that the young lovers use for correspondence. The girl Suzy, (Kaya Hayward) is appropriately dressed in the sweet school girl style of the 1960’s- complete with socks and saddle shoes. However, she’s on the verge of womanhood and Anderson has made all the proper adjustments as her dresses are subtly sexy. Contrasting cuffs and collars, nipped at the waist, and with a skater skirt for all the running around is the perfect symbol for the ingenue. As she lounged on the lake shore with her scout listening to French Pop records and soaking up sun it was official: that’s what we want our summer to be like!
