NYFW Kicks Off With a Model-Studded amfAR Affair

Like the Met Ball and Academy Awards, the annual New York amfAR gala is an event that we look forward to every year, and after witnessing last night’s red carpet lineup, it’s easy to see why.

Despite the freezing cold temperatures and mountains of slush, fashion’s top models and elite influencers turned out by the dozens for the black tie dinner held at Cipriani Wall Street on Wednesday night.  Michelle Rodriguez, Rosario Dawson, Donna Karan and Anna Wintour were all on hand for the stylish soiree, looking fabulous as expected, but forgive us ladies when we say that no one rocked the red carpet quite like the model crowd.

Essentially a fashion week show in itself, the models paraded (read: shivered) down the red carpet in one jaw-dropping look after the next.  Violet proved to be the big color of the evening with Naomi Campbell, Eniko Mihalik and Josephine Skriver among those opting for jewel toned gowns, while Kendall Jenner, Coco Rocha and Hailey Baldwin chose to make a statement in Valentine’s Day-ready red.

In terms of styles, it appears the models all got the same memo as  Karlie Kloss, Shanina Shaik, Lais Ribeiro and Jacquelyn Jablonski all wore slinky dresses showcasing some kind of a dangerous slit or plunging neckline. Well, if you’ve got model legs like Karlie, why not?

Every Drop-Dead Gorgeous Look From the 2015 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Launch Party

Never mind the freezing cold temperatures, New York’s Marquee nightclub was the hottest place to be on Tuesday evening, as Sports Illustrated threw its annual Swimsuit Issue launch party, which saw everyone from Lily Aldridge and Chrissy Teigen to Gigi HadidSara Sampaio and of course, this year’s cover girl, Hannah Davis.

Dressed in a sparkly, chain-metal mini dress from Kaufman Franco, it was easy to see why Hannah was selected as this year’s cover star — just look at her shine!  While the model’s famous Yankee boyfriend did not walk the carpet alongside his lady love, Hannah didn’t seem to mind as she had fun posing with a copy of her “controversial” new cover.  Of course, if you ask her, the image is far from naughty. While speaking to The Today Show the day before, the Virgin Islands-born beauty defended her latest work, which had been censored by the show with the addition of a giant bow around her waist.

“I think you’re making it look a lot naughtier than it really is to be honest,” Hannah said. “To be honest, I think SI always tries to do something a little different every year, and I think this year, it’s the year of the torso.”

Here’s What Really Goes on Inside a New York Fashion Week Model Casting

Every year, hundreds of aspiring and veteran models from around the world descend upon New York City for a chance to walk the runways of New York Fashion Week. The weeks leading up to the event are filled with chaos and excitement as the models roam the city attending the numerous casting calls that will ultimately decide which girls will walk and which ones will watch.  Over the past couple of days, we had the opportunity to stop by the offices of BCBGMAXAZRIA and ICB to take a peek behind the scenes and see what goes in to casting two of the week’s hottest runways, and the experience was nothing short of eye-opening.

First up: BCBG, where casting director Patrizia Pilotti was tasked with meeting with some 300 to 400 models over the course of two days.  One by one, the long-limbed models filled into the bright white showroom where they checked in, took a seat, changed into their heels and waited (sometimes for hours) for their 30-seconds with the casting crew.  The models were then called in groups of five to line up and wait to go into the casting room, where Pilotti sat at the head of table and watched as the models demonstrated their walk and, more importantly, their personality.

“A model’s presence and the way she carries herself are the qualities we’re focusing on today,” explained Pilotti. “I have to find something in the girl that makes me think she’s bringing something more to the table than the average model.  As for the walk, we’re looking for a sort of natural chicness to it.  A good walk should exude elegance.”
