It wouldn’t be New York Fashion Week without some Model Confidentials! All week long, we’ll be making the rounds backstage at some of New York’s most-talked about shows, and catching up with a number of our favorite catwalkers. Check back every day for exclusive model interviews including their go-to style tips, favorite hangouts, model-approved beauty picks and so much more!
In today’s Model Confidential, we caught up with Kel Markey backstage at the Peter Som Fall 2014 show. In between hair and makeup rotations, the all-American beauty let us in on some of her favorite NYC shops, and whose closet she envies most! We loved her laid-back vibe and can’t wait to see more of Kel in the days ahead: Read the full interview below:
It’s freezing in NYC this week! If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would you go?
Have you been there before?
I haven’t, but I’m going this summer for a friend’s wedding.
What is your it-bag this season?
I’ve been using my big Phillip Lim bag a lot and a big Reed Krakoff tote bag because you can throw pretty much anything in it, like your book and shoes and tons of stuff.
If you could identify yourself with one TV, Book, or Movie character, who would it be?
Frannie Glass from JD Salinger’s “Franny and Zooey.” Yeah that’s a bit obscure, but whatever.
Who’s one of your favorite models of all time?
I don’t know, because it is hard to pick favorites, but I like a lot of the new girls.
What about an era?
The 90’s sounded pretty amazing. The 90’s sounded like a great time to be a model.
If you could trade closets with anybody; actress, model, anybody, who would it be?
Anna Wintour’s VOGUE closet. I would like that, I would just like to have everything!
What’s one of your favorite places to shop in New York City?
I shop a lot at vintage places and I get my staple items at places like ACNE and Alexander Wang. UNIQLO and Madewell are super necessary too! UNIQLO, a Japanese store in SoHo has something called Heat Tech that they put in the shirts, tights and other things. It retains the heat inside. It’s amazing; it will change your life.
Have you ever had a fashion mishap?
Well, I am sure there have been times that my shirt has been tucked into my underwear, or my skirt has been tucked in, or I forgot to take out all my extensions and had one long piece of hair…I don’t know there are probably too many to count.
Finally, what is your favorite app to play backstage?
I am a fan of QuizUp, where you play these little quizzes with your friends on different topics and so you feel like your learning something. I am a big fan of the science and math ones and Harry Potter.
