Candice Swanepoel Goes Platinum!

We don’t mean to toot our own horn, but here at Modelinia, we’ve been known to i.d. a model from a mile away, regardless of the size of her sunglasses and floppy hat that day.  But we’ll admit, even we had trouble spotting Candice Swanepoel among the sea of models at last night’s amfAR Inspiration Gala.  That’s right, the Candice Swanepoel!

The Victoria’s Secret Angel had bleached her normally soft, honey-hued tresses just hours before hitting the red carpet, forcing us to do a double-take.   “I needed to re-do my color, and I don’t like to be bored, so I just said, Let’s do something crazy,” Candice told Fashionista.

If by crazy she means crazy beautiful, then yes, we agree!  Dressed to the nines in an edgy jewel-encrusted Theyskens Theory black gown, which she topped off with a smudged smokey eye look, the supermodel oozed mega-watt sex appeal— as if we expected anything less!  ” I don’t even know what I look like,” she joked on the red carpet.  “It’s gonna take me some time to get used to it, but I think it’s cool.”

The South African stunner was joined on the red carpet by over a dozen other decked out catwalkers who braved the flooded streets for the A-list charity event.  In the crowd of slinky sequin numbers, models Lindsey Wixson and Eniko Mihalik stood out in their feathered floor-length numbers and old-school glam curls, as did fashion icon Iman who popped in a bright orange Valentino gown.  Nicole Trunfio cut a svelte figure in an off-white column, while Dree Hemingway opted for a strapless white Calvin Klein midi with a delicate net overlay topped off with a glitzy gold-detailed clutch and a red pout— the girl can do no wrong!

Resort 2014 Review: Editors’ Picks

With this year’s Resort 2014 collections, designers have given us some seriously awesome duds to wear on our winter vacations, and while it’s hard to imagine planning that far in advance, we sure will try given this season’s offerings. Previously considered an add-on for buyers to maintain retail excitement between the main fall and spring collections, Resort has now progressed into a full-fledged season all its own. These days, designers are pumping out even larger collections than before, so Resort now boasts even more heavy-hitting statement pieces that have the potential to change up your season’s style mantra, while still supplying those staple separates we count on. With so many looks to choose from, it may be challenging to decide which route to take, hence, our editors’ top picks from the Resort previews! We’ve cut out the hassle and selected our favorites that are guaranteed to get you looking your best come that mid-year getaway!

Chloe: Marique Schimmel, Caroline Brasch Nielsen and fresh face Elisabeth Erm posed on the sloping floor of an empty pool beautifully decorated with aquamarine mosaic tile. The clothes were roomy and relaxed from the cropped trousers to the ruffled eveningwear. With this collection, Clare Waight Keller has established “the new Chloe proportion” and we can’t get enough.

3.1 Phillip Lim: The big news here is Lim’s beloved Pashli bag now comes as a backpack! While the past few 3.1 collections seemed inspired by rebellious youth, this season it’s decidedly more grown up. Perforated and metallic leathers accented lighter than air shift dresses and sporty trousers. The result? A collection with the perfect mix of work clothes and play clothes.

Alexander Wang: In this collection Wang reduced the oversize volumes he debuted for fall with a variety of pleats. From a reinvented peplum top in white leather to a pair of borderline boot-cut pants, the silhouette story was fit-and-flare. But, the biggest surprise of all was the splash of bright bubble-gum pink amongst his usual restricted black and white color palette. He gave it the usual Wang twist of course and pink has never looked less prissy.

Stella McCartney: For a designer who doesn’t use leather or skins she does animal print pretty darn well. This time it was snake skin- embossed onto jackets and silk screened onto shift dresses in vibrant yellow. The tougher reptile-inspired outerwear was worn over lingerie-like floral printed silk slips and shorts. The flirtatious and feminine collection has us swooning.

Cara Delevingne Belts It Out on Stage in London!

Cara Delevingne has made no secret of her intent to become the next Billboard chart-topper and last night, she stepped on stage to prove she has the talent (and the moves) to do it!

Making her live performance debut at DKNY’s uber cool #dknyartworks launch party in London on Wednesday night, the model-of-the-moment put on quite the show when she jumped on stage to join her ‘wifey’ Rita Ora in a special rendition of the singer’s hit single, “Shine Ya Light.”  While it’s well known that Cara is currently hitting the studios to work on her first album, the superstar had no problem singing along to her bestie’s hits, occasionally even running off with the mic to belt it out on her own.  This of course was topped off only by the duo’s crowd-pleasing dance moves— i.e. some low-down bumping and grinding!  What else would you expect to see at a ’90-style rager?

As the current face of the brand, Cara was no doubt the perfect host for the bash as she proved to be the best-dressed partier in attendance.  Rocking head-to-toe DKNY, the supermodel stole the show (no pun intended!) in a slinky monochrome jumpsuit with white racing stripes down the side, a matching bomber jacket, heel wedges and snapback.  To edge up the sporty look, the cover girl added a pair of serious gold ear cuffs not unlike the ones she wore to the Met Gala, a seductive smokey eye and her twisted into a French braid.

“It’s amazing to be asked to be part of it especially being from London, they’re such a family as well so it’s really really cool,” said Cara.

So cool was it in fact, that top model Jourdan Dunn couldn’t resist popping in on the fun, taking the chance to show off her washboard abs in a mesh DKNY crop top and sleek black leggings.

When Superheros and Supermodels Collide!

On the surface, the comic book conflation of high adventure and high fashion doesn’t make a lot of sense, especially if you judge strictly by audience demographics. The readership of superhero comics, far and away from the medium’s dominant genre, consists largely of straight men. However, the superhero and the supermodel have much in common. After all, both are cultural icons. Both look stylish in tights. Both face down tough challenges every day (the hero: natural disasters, fiendish deathtraps; the model: flyaway hair, combination skin). Both can abruptly lose their powers when exposed to certain agents (the hero: kryptonite; the model: broken heel). It wasn’t until 2011 that nerds across the country squirmed as some of the most beautiful women in the world gave new meaning to the term ‘Super Angels’ in the superhero-themed segment of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show featuring Adriana Lima and Alessandra Ambrosio to name a few. But, for whatever the reason, the decidedly weird mash-up of comics and fashion bears a long and literally colorful history. Supermodels did not represent specific famed superheroes, but were merely inspired by the comic book characters. We definitely wouldn’t have a problem with these girls fighting crime in our neighborhood! Feeling inspired by the release of this summer’s blockbuster flick, Man of Steel, this weekend, we felt compelled to pay tribute to some of our all-time favorite supermodel superheros in all of their high-flying glory!  Check out some of our favorite top model-superhero editorials featured in the slideshow below:

Crowns of Glory: Shop This Season’s Hottest Festival Accessory!

The countdown to Bonaroo is only a week away and we can’t help but think of all of the summer trends that will hit the festival, both on and off the stage.  Among them, we anticipate seeing flower crowns galore, which as it turns out, are not the one-hit wonders we thought they were at last summer’s festival debut.  Spotted on the heads of models and street-style mavens throughout Coachella and last weekend’s Governors Ball in New York City, floral headpieces have proven to be the de rigueur of summer festival style for bohemians and girly girls alike!  Not sure where to start? Festival favorite Cult Gaia and is the perfect starting point as their crowns have been previously been sported by the likes of Alessandra Ambrosio  and Jessica Hart. Another great option is Urban Outfitters, which currently has a number of floral toppers to choose from, ranging from a sweet strand of daisies, to an all-out rose bouquet.  This month also saw the launch of Etsy’s first bridal collection in collaboration with Nordstrom that believe it or not, also offers a couple of vintage-inspired garlands that would be perfect for those looking to take a more subtle approach to the trend.  To finish off the hippie-chic look, we suggest rocking soft, loose waves like models Poppy Delevingne and Alessandra Ambrosio pictured above.

Of course, nothing will ever beat the real thing, which is why we also suggest skipping the store browsing all together and making your own personalized version at home.  Trust us, it’s easier than you think.  Start by weaving your pick of fresh flowers into a braided crown, which you can then choose to pin into a braided updo.  For the best results, spray your hair with texture spray before making two wrap-around milkmaid braids and then pinning the flowers into updo.  The exposed braids will act as an anchor for your DIY arrangement and is a no-fuss option for those sticky summer afternoons.

Ready to channel you’re inner festival goddess?  Browse our top flower crown picks ahead of this summer’s lineup in the slideshow below or take a stroll about the garden and pick out your own!

Grace Coddington and Elettra Shake Things Up in the Goodness Kitchen!

We used to count down the days until Friday, but as the weeks wear on, we find ourselves looking forward to Thursdays more and more thanks to our new favorite model-chef, Elettra Wiedemann!

In the latest installment of her Vogue cooking series, Elettra paid a special visit to the apartment of none other than Grace Coddington, to whip up a hearty meal of steak and potatoes gratin.  “It’s a dish that any Vogue person really shouldn’t be making, because it’s incredibly bad for you,” Coddington explains before pouring a jar of cream over her potatoes.

Believe it or not, this isn’t a recipe that the tastemaker dug out specially for the occasion.  The stick-to-your-ribs meal is actually a go-to party dish for Coddington, who believes in using “only the best meat, the best this, the best that.” As if we expected anything less of the beloved editor! What we weren’t expecting to hear was that Coddington once had a schoolgirl crush on Eletrra’s father, whom the editor had worked with when he was about 19-years old, and is actually rumored to be quite the mess in the kitchen— a statement that she neither confirmed, nor denied.

We should also note here that the culinary duo were graced with a visit from a particularly adorable guest, and one that should look quite familiar to anyone who has had the pleasure of reading Coddington’s best-selling memoir, Grace.  That’s right, Bart, Coddington’s famous fluffy cat, joins the women on set just in time to watch Coddington do a little shimmy for the camera to demonstrate how models were supposed to dance on the runways in the Sixities— you know, back in the good ol’ days. “I really love what I do,” says Coddington, “or else I wouldn’t still be here annoying Anna, you know.”  Grace, by all means, feel free to come by our office and “annoy” us anytime you like!
