NYFW Beauty How-To: Marc by Marc Jacobs’ Rebellious Beauty

In just three short seasons, Luella Bartley and Katie Hillier have firmly established Marc by Marc Jacobs as a brand that is fierce, conceptual and deeply connected with subculture. The duo kicked off their captainship of the brand with a BMX Ninja girls-inspired collection for fall 2014, followed by last season’s offerings, which channeled London’s rave culture. Now, for fall 2015, Bartley and Hillier are showcasing the brand’s rebellious spirit once again, this time channeling the Guardian Angels of the Eighties, if you can believe it.

Party Pics: Behati Prinsloo, Sara Sampaio and More Step Out for Nomad Two Worlds

Despite the slushy morning, Tuesday’s weather cleared up long enough at night for the fashion flock to strap on their most sizzling heels and toast the opening of Seminole Spirit — a new photography exhibition presented by Nomad Two Worlds.  Hosted by Russell James, Donna Karan and Chief of Florida’s Seminole tribe, James E. Billie, the art party drew a number of impressive catwalkers to Stephan Weiss Studio in the West Village, including supermodel Behati Prinsloo, who is featured in the collection shot by James.  While she may have been without her best accessory for the evening (of course, we’re referring to her husband Adam Levine), Behati impressed nonetheless, stepping in a cropped black Balenciaga jumpsuit and lace-up kitten heels.  Among the other models in attendance were Sports Illustrated Swimsuit stunners Sara Sampaio, Hailey Clauson, Kelly Rohrbach and Victoria’s Secret Angels Devon Windsor, Elsa Hosk and Martha Hunt among others.

Sure, we all swoon when a celebrity steps out onto the red carpet in a show-stopping dress, but that actually translate into sales for the designer? According to a new report, while the effect might not be immediate, stars photographed on the red carpet — images that are instantly transmitted worldwide — help boost sales of similar styles (if not necessarily the exact custom dress) as well as the designer’s other products, from accessories to fragrances and secondary lines. ~ WWD

NYFW Beauty How To: 3.1 Phillip Lim’s Punk Red Lip

During a season that’s so far been filled with natural-looking lips, it’s refreshing to see a pop of lively color, as we did at 3.1 Phillip Lim’s fall 2015 show on Monday.  “The clothes were kind of like modern punk,” said Francelle Daly, working for NARS. ” They reminded me of my old oxblood Doc Martens—I wanted that to be the color of the lips.” With the iconic footwear in mind, Daly then set out to create a look that was somewhere between “raw and refined.” The rawness entered into the picture via tinted moisturizer that mimicked “real skin,” while the semimatte lip added the polish.  In general, brick red lips appear to be the one beauty trend makeup artists have fallen in love with this season. At Donna Karen, Charlotte Tilbury combined two shine-free tubes from MAC (Spirit and Verve), before dabbing them onto catwalkers’ mouths and cheeks for a tawny flush.

As for the hair, lead stylist Paul Hanlon for Bumble and bumble told WWD that he drew inspiration from old editorials by Corinne Day, who was famous for her work with Kate Moss and Rosemary Ferguson.  ”It’s not grungy” though, explains Hanlon.  ”It’s still clean. The style is just a bit broken and the hair doesn’t really matter. Basically, she washed her hair the night before and then she came to the shoot.” Using four key products including Prep spray, Thickening Hairspray, Does It All Styling Spray and Brilliantine, Hanlon began by parting the hair down the middle to remove some of the weight. Next, he dried 80% of the hair, leaving it slightly wet, before setting it with a flatiron.  To add shine, Hanlon also flatironed the top to make the hair skinny, and went over it again to create light waves.  “It’s girls like Daria Werbowy and Freja Beha Erichsen who walk in and their hair is like this,” he told WWD.  Count us in!
