Blond pixie locks in place, Agyness Deyn spent the whole night dancing in the DJ booth to her favorite songs, headphones on, right next to her man. Last November, Manchester cutie Agyness and Albert Hammond Jr. of the Strokes played DJ at the Cool versus Cruel Awards at New York’s Bowery Hotel. Whether you were there for the music or merely for the eye candy, you didn’t leave disappointed. Agyness, dressed in black pants and a T-shirt accessorized with Charlotte Ronson’s red-and-black “anti-fur” pin, ran down the list of her current fave bands and solo artists: Dire Straits, Billy Idol, Cyndi Lauper, and the Den Trees. (Don’t worry if you weren’t in attendance—we have the playlist right here.)
“If you DJ,” says Agyness, “you can totally choose what you want to hear, rather than go to a party where it’s like, ‘This is nice, but it’s not my kind of music.’’’ Her choice of tunes varies from night to night. “I change it up every time based on my mood. I can start off quite chill, but I always like to insert some random stuff in there, like the music from ‘The Jungle Book’ or ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.’’’ And the crowd loved it: The entire second floor of the Bowery Hotel was packed with fashion insiders who stayed until the very end.
Sadly, we won’t be getting any original songs from Agyness, since she denies the rumors that she’s starting a band. “I love that everyone’s like, ‘I hear you’re doing this.’ My mom does that, too. She’ll say, ‘Are you going backpacking around Europe?’ I’m like ‘no,’ and she’s like, ‘But I read about it in the paper!’’’ Agyness adds sensibly, “I’m just focusing on modeling and chilling out, really.”
They may be a busy couple, but Agyness and Albert still find time to hang out together despite their hectic schedules by mixing work and play. During the Strokes’ recent concert tour, she’d fly in to see his gigs. “I was working at the same time as he was so I flew in, saw a few gigs, and flew back. We bought roller skates and when the stadiums were being set up we would skate around the stadium. Me and Albert were roller-skating everywhere!”
