Runway Recap: Chanel and Valentino Keep Things Ladylike on the Runway!

With the Raf Simons and Hedi Slimane debut collections out of the way, Paris has been able to return to its regularly scheduled shows, beginning with Karl Lagerfeld’s always anticipated Chanel presentation!  Seated among the towering wind turbines lining the catwalk at the Grand Palais were a number of A-list stars including front row model favorites Poppy Delevigne, Laetitia Casta, and Inès de la Fressange.  Jennifer Lopez was also one of the select stars seated front and center, turning the show into a family affair as she was seated next to boyfriend Casper Smart and her four-year-old daughter Emme— who looked adorable in her little Chanel accessories by the way!

Although the designer’s pieces were inspired by fresh air, this morning’s light and breezy Spring show did exactly what the brand does best: i.e. wow us with its feminine elegance!  This season, the storied French house gave women a lot to consider, presenting a wide sweeping range of pearl-studded jackets— what, did you expect rocker studs?— in black and white, cropped tweed jackets, strapless column dresses, and HUGE hats with transparent brims. As seen on top models Kati Nescher (the show’s opener!), Anja Rubik, Lindsey Wixson, Cara Delevingne, Joan Smalls, and newcomer Lily McMenamy, the show’s emphasis was on the large, voluminous shapes of the garments, which featured cocoon silhouettes, bell sleeves, and molded shoulders.  Trapeze style dresses with wind propeller prints and sequin flowers rounded out the cool collection, revealing an optimistic sensibility for spring.

Similarly, Valentino’s spring lineup was one that relied on its ability to create incredibly feminine pieces that appeared modern and fresh, while still referencing the history of the brand.  However, unlike Chanel’s wind-blown garments, Valentino presented a string of delicate, wispy dresses and elongated silhouettes that recalled an old-school sense of romanticism.  The Valentino ladies— Hanne Gaby OdieleJulia Nobis, Bette Franke, and Marie Piovesen— floated down the runway in a host of demure, mostly neutral-toned frocks that were given a slight modern edge with sheer, chiffon panels.  The classic trench coat was also upgraded this season with snakeskin prints, while prim and proper jumpsuits were given puff sleeves and high, school-boy collars. As always, Valentino kept it sweet and simple for spring!
