Runway Report: Holmes & Yang Presents The New Kind of Cool

You have to give it to Katie Holmes. This month the actress and designer presented her first collection at New York Fashion Week, in the wake of a highly publicized divorce from Tom Cruise. And we will say this- amongst the “celebrity noise” and following successors like the Olsen Twins and Victoria Beckham, the Holmes & Yang collection speaks for itself- and we are listening.

Holmes and her design partner, Jeanne Yang, have made one thing clear: they know who they are designing for. In a collection that mixes menswear pieces with feminine flair, the looks are about the clothes. Classic and understatedly elegant pieces like black trousers, blazers, trench coats, and leather bombers were placed beside feminine feather printed cap-sleeved frocks and some KILLER sky-high slitted maxi skirts a la Angelina Jolie.  The cuts were refined, and the colors mostly neutral with pops of bright red. It was all about balance like pairing a beaded jumpsuit with a powder blue sweater or pairing shorts, bra tops and mini skirts with blazers. It was about showing skin, without looking naked.  It’s ladylike, but it’s cool.  It’s trying, but not too hard.

The girls wore zero jewelry and barely-there make up (quite reminiscent of Ms. Holmes herself) with thin ankle-strapped heels in red, cream and black. Where the makeup and accessories remained simple, the models’ hair was anything but. The girls’ hair was braided down on the sides, while the top was messy and brushed backwards into a long pony down the back. It was part faux hawk, part lion’s mane and completely fantastic. And it set the tone for the theme of the collection, an almost undone perfection.

The Holmes & Yang girl is a sleek dresser, but she certainly does not get up at 6am to do her hair and make up.  She’s well dressed but not overdressed.  She’s social but not a socialite.  She is poised and she is thoughtful and not only do we embrace this girl, we LOVE this girl. We can’t quite give the Holmes & Yang team enough kudos for their refreshing presentation. They debuted Fashion Week with a bang and we cannot wait to see more.
