“Regiment” was the inspiration for Prabal Gurung’s fall collection. The military influence was a strong departure from his spring showcase of floaty, ostrich feather laden frocks. The collection however, was not with out his usual dash of femininity: silky satin dresses with gold embellishment were certainly show-stoppers. The tribe of tough girls on the runway included Liu Wen, Caroline Brash Nielsen and Nadja Bender. The first girl out march the runway in hunter green jackets, with richly embroidered pieces inspired by the fabrics of Gurung’s native Nepal. Gurung also collaborated with Zana Bayne to create leather harnesses that were worn over A-line dresses and sweaters. The result was stunning. Gurung gave his girls the right mix of soft and hard. While last year’s show opener Joan Smalls was not in attendance, the show featured industry vets, Hanne Gaby Odiele, Bette Franke, and Catherine McNeil as well as rising stars Zuzzanna Bijoch and Ava Smith. The clothes were fierce if next winter sees as much snow as we have in the last two days, this is what we will want to be wearing!
