Saskia, Tilda, Bowie and Andrej on set of “The Stars (Are Out Tonight)”
When David Bowie first stepped out onto the scene in the late ’60s, it wasn’t just the music industry that snapped to attention. The fashion world has been infatuated with the ‘Thin White Duke’ from the start, dedicating entire trends, runway collections and museum exhibitions in his honor. It seems only fitting then that Bowie and fashion should collide in the icon’s new music video for the second track off his upcoming album, The Next Day.
Making reference to the very gender-bending tricks Bowie made famous during his glam-rock days, the debut video for “The Stars (Are Out Tonight)” stars a mix of androgynous model muses including Saskia de Brauw, Andrej Pejic and Iselin Steiro, who join the musician and actress Tilda Swinton for an outrageous game of gender role playing.
Andrej and Saskia cause mayhem as a celebrity couple
Directed by avant-garde filmmaker Floria Sigismondi, Swinton and Bowie play the part of a polished suburban couple whose seemingly “nice life” is turned upside-down by the manic celebrity couple next-door played by Saskia (the man) and Andrej (the woman). As the song plays on, the model couple can be seen shadowing Bowie and his June Cleaver-esque wife around the supermarket before finally breaking into their home in the middle of the night at which point Andrej— wearing a basque and heels, but of course— climbs on top of Bowie to steal a kiss as he sleeps.
Meanwhile, the video flashbacks to the musician’s earlier days, with Iselin playing his younger self, as manic wife Tilda battles with Saskia and Andrej’s mischievous antics. And if you think that sounds strange, just wait until you reach the video’s dramatic, shape-shifting climax— this one is sure to leave you speechless.
