The new year is approaching and we may not be partying like it’s 1999, but we are certainly excited about the future of fashion! Every year after the marathon that is fashion month, we take a moment to think long and hard about where fashion is going, and this year, the answer is forward. New techniques like laminating fabrics, bonding leathers and high resolution printing have opened doors for young designers like Jonathan Saunders and Mary Katranzou. Of course, they were not the first fashion designers interested in designing for the future. In the 1950’s and 60’s, Cristobal Balenciaga’s sculptural creations were heralded for a conceptual and technical power that had never been seen before. Nicolas Ghesquiere’s most recent collection for Balenciaga channeled a hopefulness for the future with 1980’s silhouettes and futuristic fan sweatshirts that had people wondering “will anyone wear those?” The answer was clear when models and editors alike swarmed fashion week in the puffy toppers with the words “join a weird trip” inscribed across their chest. And just look at how Anja Rubik nailed the trend with a fuzzy orange sweater, padded motorcycle jacket and snood. We may not be driving flying cars just yet, but these super wild fabrics and materials have us feeling futuristic nonetheless. If you’re looking to take on the future we think these pieces will be perfect!
