Fashion industry insider Camilla Morton jumped right into the throes of New York Fashion Week and will be guest-blogging for Modelinia all week long.
Effortless and understated—if you have the poise of Maryna Linchuk or Abbey Lee Kershaw—was the message at Donna Karan, which was exquisite and stripped down to only the best elements. Anna Selezneva caught the modern bold new vibe in her tomato twisted prom dress. If it hadn’t been for the havoc the Obamas reigned on the traffic, closing avenues and causing gridlock, my own journey ending in the arms of the police, this could have been the day’s highlight. As it was, I missed it and hurtled straight to Thakoon only to arrive at the same time as Chanel Iman, who was still in full Donna makeup, while the rest were lining up.
Moments later, past the PR army of clipboards and every major international editor, quiet fell as Alla Kostromicheva walked out to the eerie techno music in a ruby floral georgette with a hint of an obi in his opening Tidal dress. Shapes were soft and feminine, draped and delicate. Gracie Carvalho’s silk floral print was the dress of my dreams for the right here and now. The razor-sharp new tailoring and twills or, say, Anya Kazakova’s denim-and-techno twill seamed pants looked suitable only for those whose legs are slim-lined perfection. But that is what Thakoon, a star of The September Issue, delivers: perfection. He can make one girl look like a nymph, the next a body-con ninja, the next the ultimate rock chick, the next a fairy princess, and isn’t that what we all dream of? ~ Camilla Morton
