Long lashes and pretty lips are a staple on the red carpet, but once in a while you get a look that breaks the beauty boundaries. Last night at the Met Gala, some models and celebrities helped their gowns stand out with enhanced beauty techniques and trends.
THE GOLD STANDARD

We don’t mean wearing gold makeup—this is a specific way to craft your beauty routine around a gleaming gold dress. Karolina Kurkova was an absolute knockout in her gown by Rachel Zoe. Complete with a matching headpiece, the only way to work a shimmering dress like this is to go heavy on the eyes but leave the rest to perfect skin and a natural lip. That gold reflects the light onto your face so having a perfectly applied foundation is key. Carey Mulligan, nailed this with her signature retro lashes, and Jessica Pare has mastered the ‘60s style dark eye and pale lip that we have grown used to seeing her in on Mad Men.
DARK LIPS

Some ladies got a little Goth on the carpet. Though the vampire craze has died down a bit, some still embrace their inner darkness by going with a deep lip color. Lana del Ray was the most in-your-face with the theme, wearing not only a dark lip, but a cape over her silver Altuzarra dress. Other ladies like Liu Wen, Amber Valletta, and Kate Bosworth kept things ladylike while playing up the pout.
NATURAL MAKEUP

Sometimes you just have to let your gown take center stage.
Heidi Klum is always sure that her classically beautiful face is never hidden under makeup on the red carpet. With just the right amount of eyeliner and lashes, she perfectly balanced her custom lace Escada dress.
The newly married Caroline Trentini is another model who doesn’t hide behind foundation and blush. Accompanied by Olivier Theyskens (who also designed her wedding dress) she managed to not only wear very little on her face, but her dress was made of denim!
Solange Knowles let her bright yellow peplum Rachel Roy dress shine on while she looked fresh-faced and wide-eyed. She and Rachel showed up together and let their natural beauty and perfectly tailored gowns take center stage.
