It wouldn’t be a Steven Meisel muse-obsessed issue without a feature on the master of photography himself. Aptly titled “The Godfather,” Mr. Meisel shot two epic group shots for the May 2009 issue of Vogue—and even posed himself for one—bringing together girls who helped create: Caroline Murphy, Liya Kebede, Kristen McMenamy, Coco Rocha, Jessica Stam, Stella Tennant, Agyness Deyn, Guinevere Van Seenus, Natalia Vodianova, Amber Valleta, Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, Karen Elson, Christy Turlington, Isabeli Fontana, Natasha Poly, Caroline Trentini, Lara Stone, Sasha Pivovarova, and Raquel Zimmermann.
The issue celebrates the photographer with an extensive interview and even displays some personal images, including a portrait of his parents and a ’90s shot of him alongside Linda Evangelista. There’s also a collage of iconic Meisel Vogue moments over the years, showing an all-American Gisele Bundchen for the December 2001 cover, Coco Rocha in Vermeer style for the September 2007 issue, Stella Tennant in a Versace suit for the October 1997 issue, Naomi Campbell with Kristen McMenamy dressed in grunge for December 1992, and so many more.
