And now, a note from our Fashion Correspondent at London Fashion Week, Camilla Morton:
Giles remains one of the hottest tickets, and nicest designers in London. He also decided to show at a venue nowhere near the Victoria & Albert Museum, so designed to bring my minute-by-minute military planning out in a cold sweat.
While London is often seen as the poor relation to the other great fashion cities, Giles has always bucked this rule. He has also resisted moving his show to Paris or Milan and stayed faithful to London. He brought the hair, makeup, and stylists that work on the big name advertisers to him. He has models that fly in on exclusive, and what models! And, as well as all this, he has content and a collection that deserves all the fluffing and fuss.
This season he opened with ‘80s supermodel Rachel Williams. Superwomen seem to be taken over from the girls on the runway. His clothes were strong and aggressive, with sculpted greys, interlocked C’s, corseted, graphic, and made to couture standards. Oversized knits and thigh high boots – it was clear the girls liked the clothes, even if they were meant to be focusing on looking moody and angry, rather than snuggly-sexy in next season’s groove.
