Through the Pages of Vogue

The inside of Vogue’s September issue reminds us of the May issue with the massive model obsession. Sure, the cover’s a celebrity, but inside models take over the 584 pages in the form of editorials, campaigns, and a few little fun details in between.

First of all, there’s a thousand and one stunning ads to stare at, and though we’ve seen them all before, it really never gets old.

Continue to flip through and you’ll find Anna Wintour’s letter to the editor, illustrated with the models of the moment, of course dressed in Fashion’s Night Out T-shirts. Luckily each shirt is styled differently for the girls. Raquel Zimmermann’s is long and belted, while Lily Donaldson accents hers with leggings—shocking, we know.

(Momentary distraction with the double-page fold out for D&G’s new fragrances featuring Claudia Schiffer, Eva Herzigova, and Naomi Campbell…)

The model love continues on the contributor’s page, where Teri Agins accents her quote with an image of her posing alongside Iman, then the issue devotes an entire two pages to the memory of Beverly Johnson—the first African-American woman ever on the cover of Vogue. Liya Kebede and Lakshmi Menon receive a style shout-out for their bold moment in baggy ’80s-style pantaloons.

Once you get to the beauty pages, you’ll be in love. Model Behavior allows the beauties to expand upon their daily must-haves: Chanel Iman chooses Cover Girl and Vonte, while Catherine McNeil needs Narciso Rodriguez Essence perfume and Chanel nail polish. Lily Donaldson loves Sonia Kashuk lip tint and SK-II, and Karlie Kloss is a fan of Shu Uemura shampoo and Marc Jacobs perfume, of course. And finally Isabeli Fontana goes with Viktor & Rolf perfume and Bobbi Brown eyeliner.

And then the editorials begin. Natalia Vodianova transforms into Little Red Riding Hood, frolicking “Into the Woods” for Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott in a cape that granny slash Marc Jacobs made, while Viktoriya Sasonkina, Sasha Pivovarova, Coco Rocha, Karen Elson, and Liya Kebede time travel to the 1940s to get “Into the Mood” of the elegant and romantic era for Steven Meisel.

Never have gloves and brooches been more fashionable.

Karlie Kloss earns her very own double-page spread in “I, Karlie” where Steven Meisel sings her praises, and then the master Caroline Trentini teaches her protégée the Vogue ways in “Take Cover.” Does this mean more Karlie jumping? Here’s hoping.

Jourdan Dunn shows off loungewear for day, while Liya gives suits a new look and Lily models the must-haves. Could you ask for anything more?
