When Manhattan Met Prince Harry and Polo

If the city was quiet on Saturday, it’s because everyone from the fashion world was out on Governor’s Island for the second Veuve Clicquot Manhattan Polo Classic. Prince Harry came over from England with his Sentebale team to play Nacho Figueras, the new face of Ralph Lauren Polo Fragrances, and the Black Watch team. Luckily the game wasn’t plagued by the rain of the week, or the thunderstorm that occurred at last year’s match.

After a lunch under the awning, guests including Hilary Rhoda, Alek Wek, and Veronica Webb sipped Veuve Clicquot and turned their attention toward the field to watch Prince Harry win. “It was the perfect Saturday to watch polo, eat lunch, and enjoy the Champagne,” said Hilary. “It was also my first polo match, which was such a treat to watch Prince Harry!”

There were fantastic hats, ranging in sizes and creativity, alongside amazing outfits—long sundresses in bright colors like Alek’s vibrant yellow Zac Posen dress that complemented her neon cast—all against the ever-present Veuve Clicquot yellow. The Champagne was flowing, with the company setting the perfect picnic by providing blankets, lawn chairs, and, of course, the bubbly.

Most conversations during the day were over the star power that turned out—Marc Jacobs, Madonna, LL Cool J, Donna Karan, Rachel Roy, Chloë Sevigny, and Kate Hudson—as well as the ongoing debate of Harry versus Nacho. Many had their own strong opinions, though the match’s end result didn’t seem to faze many. Everyone was simply happy to drink Champagne and watch polo in the gorgeous weather. “Nacho was great!” said Marc. “He invited us out, so we were here for him. We’ve never been to a polo match, so it was really exciting.”

Following the awards ceremony, Marc Jacobs, Lorenzo Martone, Matt Lauer, Chloë Sevigny, and Modelinia all hopped on the same ferry back to Manhattan, after a perfect day of sun, polo, and champers.
