Brooke Christa Camille Shields has enjoyed a diverse and celebrated career spanning nearly her entire life. Born May 31, 1965, in New York City to cosmetics industry executive Francis Shields and aspiring actress Teri Shields, she landed her first modeling gig—an ad for Ivory soap—in 1966 at just 11 months old. She continued as a successful child model under the guidance of legendary agent Eileen Ford, who in her biography admitted to creating her children's division just for Brooke.
In 1980 at age 14, Brooke became the youngest model ever to grace the cover of Vogue. That same year, she caused a stir by appearing in print and television ads for Calvin Klein Jeans. The simple but suggestive tagline, "You want to know what comes between me and my Calvins? Nothing," made Brooke a hot topic of debate. In addition to modeling Brooke pursued acting, first appearing in 1978's controversial Pretty Baby. Her most famous role came two years later when she starred in Blue Lagoon.
Brooke put her modeling and film career on hold in 1983 to attend Princeton University. During her time there she wrote her autobiography, On Your Own. In 1987, Brooke graduated with honors with a degree in French literature.
After college Brooke continued acting, famously guest starring in popular television shows like Friends before landing her own sitcom, Suddenly Susan, which aired from 1996 until 2000. Since then Brooke has been involved in a range of different projects, from television cameos to starring roles on Broadway in musicals such as Grease, Cabaret, and Chicago. Brooke published her second book, Down Came the Rain, in 2003. The book explores Brooke's highly publicized battle and recovery from postpartum depression, which she suffered after the birth of her first child, Rowan Francis.
In 2006, Brooke and her husband Chris Henchy enjoyed the very happy birth of their second daughter, Grier Hammond, and a year later she returned to primetime with the lead role in NBC’s Lipstick Jungle.
