Hailing from Friesland, the Netherlands, Doutzen Kroes was born January 23, 1985. Not one to leave her future to chance, she wasn't "discovered"—she sent her own snapshots to Paparazzi Model Management in Amsterdam in 2003 and moved to New York that same year.
Doutzen landed her first cover, French Elle, in September 2004. Since then, she has been either on or in different editions of Vogue 17 times, and graced nine covers of Elle, three covers of Numéro, and the cover of the September 2006 issue of Time, among many others.
Called out as "a rising star" by Style.com and Model of the Year by Vogue.com in 2005, Doutzen found herself rocketing toward stardom when she signed a contract with L'Oréal Paris in 2006, which led to her being ranked one of Forbes' highest paid models in 2007 and 2008. She began her relationship with Victoria's Secret in 2005 when she walked in its runway show, and became a Victoria's Secret Angel in 2008.
Since 2005, Doutzen has worked for countless A-list photographers and designers. She met Steven Meisel on her 2005 cover shoot for Vogue Italia and worked with him several more times after that, including a Dolce & Gabbana campaign in 2005 and Vogue's May 2007 cover. Peter Lindbergh shot her for Vogue Paris' June 2006 editorial and Patrick Demarchelier worked with Doutzen for the 2007 Pirelli calendar. She has been the face of Valentino, Gucci, and Calvin Klein White Label. And in 2005, she replaced Christy Turlington as the face of Calvin Klein Eternity fragrance.
Doutzen loves working out daily and enjoys such activities as running and ice skating, as well as any water sport. Very connected to her home country, the Dutch model appears in an official campaign for the Frisian language—her mother's native tongue. She also appeared in a documentary produced by Piter Claus, who followed her during Milan Fashion Week in 2006. The film won Best Regional Documentary at the NL Awards.
Believing that beauty and elegance come from inside, Doutzen looks forward to nourishing her inner beauty with new charitable endeavors. She is already involved with the World Wildlife Fund.
