Edita Vilkeviciute has one of the most classically beautiful faces in the business, so it’s no surprise that she has been gaining massive ground, with shoots for Vogue Italia, Numéro, and German Vogue, as well as campaigns for Versace fragrance, CK Jeans , D&G, and Etro. Her chameleon-like looks mean that everyone wants her, but she also can pull off the neat trick of remaining instantly recognizable, thanks to her wide, blue-gray eyes and sky-high cheekbones.
Edita was born on New Year’s Day in 1989 in Kaunas, Lithuania. “I was like a boy [growing up]...very much,” she says. “Fighting, climbing trees, being in nature, playing basketball. I wasn’t a very ‘high-heels girl.’ Now I’m both.”
Edita was discovered walking down the street by Italian agency Women Management. “I never wanted to be a model—it just happened,” she explains. “It happened very quickly, and I really love it.” In 2006 she signed with Viva agency in Paris, making her debut in 2007 for Roberto Cavalli’s Just Cavalli line. From then on, she became a familiar face on the catwalks, opening Valentino and Burberry Prorsum shows, and walking for such prestigious names as Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Lanvin, 3.1 Philip Lim, Alexander Wang, Balenciaga, Balmain, Chloé, Derek Lam, Dolce & Gabbana, Emilio Pucci, Etro, Fendi, Givenchy, Hervé Léger, Just Cavalli, Matthew Williamson, Max Mara, Moschino, Stella McCartney, Zac Posen, Alberta Ferretti, Bottega Veneta, Karl Lagerfeld, and Lanvin. “I love to walk on the catwalk,” she says. We certainly believe it!
In November 2008, Edita was in the annual Victoria’s Secret fashion show in Miami, walking in the Pink section.
Her campaigns have included Karl Lagerfeld, Gap in Japan, Dior Beauty, Emporio Armani, Etro, Aninoto, Dorotea, D&G, D&G Cruise, D&G Resort, Les Copains, Marc O’ Polo, Pronovias, SiSi, Trucco, and Versace fragrance. Edita has graced the pages of many fashion magazines around the world, including Allure and Vogue in Germany and France. She has been the cover girl of Numéro (France), Marie Claire (Italy), Allure (Korea), and Vogue (Russia, Italy).
Calvin Klein advertisements have been known to launch careers and can create a buzz like no other label (think Kate Moss and Marky Mark!). Edita’s current commercial for CK Jeans, shot by Steven Meisel, is already creating controversy. The series of ads features a crop of models who are all some of the industry’s hottest stars and freshest new faces, including Anna Jagodzinska, Anna Selezneva, and Natasha Poly, as well as Edita.
Karl Lagerfeld’s film directorial debut was a 10-minute short based on Coco Chanel’s early years. Shooting in a Paris studio for two days, Karl was inspired by Mack Sennett’s black-and-white silent movies, he says, with “spliced-in newsreel footage of WWI, because I think it’s interesting to juxtapose fashion with the horrible images of the trenches.” Karl used all of his own people to play the extras, such as muse Amanda Harlech and her daughter Tallulah Ormsby-Gore as a customer and a model, Brad Kroenig as Chanel fan Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich, and Karl’s bodyguard Sebastien Jondeau as a Russian general.
For the role of Chanel, Karl brought in Edita. “It’s very nice to know a person like Karl and to know how he really is,” Edita says. “Incredible. I’m very happy.”
Edita hit headlines all over the world after her recent shoot with “High School Musical” star Zac Efron for Interview magazine. The black-and-white photos show Zac lying in the sand, embracing Edita. Zac insisted that they weren’t trying to be provocative. “We didn’t go in there with the intention of shaking things up,” he says. “At least, I didn’t.” Zac commented on his photo spread for the publication, telling “Access Hollywood” that posing with a nude model was “pretty crazy.” He explained further, “It just kind of happened. She was so professional. It wasn’t really up to me, so I just kind of rolled with it.”
Edita admits that she had no idea who Zac was when she was paired with him for the session. She told the magazine, “Since I’ve never watched American television, I didn’t understand until everyone started asking me to get his autograph.”
At this point in her career, Edita is all about hard work. “I never go out to places where I have to dress up, really. I don’t party when I work, and then when I don’t work, I don’t party because I’m tired!” And what has Edita learned from modeling? “First, to be brave—this is the main thing,” she says. “And of course to be with different people because it’s many, many different kinds of people…oh, and the biggest thing I learned is how to walk in high heels! Because never before I was walking with high heels. Now…sometimes I think it’s incredible!”
