Fashion would be lost without its charming wild child. From the day we started plastering her legendary Calvin Klein Jeans ads on our bedroom walls to our recent obsession with her Topshop collection—we've always loved Kate.
Born Katherine Ann Moss on January 16, 1974, the Croydon, England, native was discovered at JFK airport and changed the fashion landscape forever. In contrast to the curvaceous supermodels of the early '90s, Kate's delicate 5'7" frame ushered in a new era, introducing the world to the "waif." Although often considered the anti-supermodel, Kate's beauty and talent in front of the camera launched her to star status. She has represented brands like YSL and Calvin Klein and has landed on the covers of more than 300 magazines, including W, Allure, and British Vogue.
As befits an icon, Kate has often been at the center of controversy. Early in Kate's career, the media questioned her weight and labeled her look "heroin chic." The paparazzi became obsessed and followed her romance and subsequent breakup with actor Johnny Depp. In more recent years, Kate's on-again, off-again relationship with Babyshambles singer Pete Doherty has given the tabloids plenty of material to work with. Kate faced a very public struggle with drug addiction and its consequences after Britain's Daily Mirror published photos and videos of her using cocaine. Several clients immediately dropped Kate from their campaigns, but the green-eyed beauty rebounded and became the face of Burberry, Dior, Longchamp, Louis Vuitton, Stella McCartney, and Versace. Some were astonished by her 18 contracts, but her fans never wavered.
Fame also brings praise, and the world has long hailed Kate as a fashion original. As the subject of "how to" style stories and the recipient of countless "best dressed" titles, Kate finally brought her enviable thrown-together look to the masses. The queen of effortless cool launched a collection with the London-based retailer Topshop that’s inspired by her own personal style. Kate's designs run the gamut from biker chic to ingenue, high-gloss glam to romantic bohemian. She also designed Topshop T-shirts for the Starlight Children's Foundation, an organization that grants wishes to terminally ill children. Kate is a longtime supporter of Breakthrough Breast Cancer, as well.
On September 29, 2002, Kate had a daughter, Lila, with Dazed & Confused editor Jefferson Hack. She is also godmother to Clash bassist Paul Simonon's two sons, as well as Jude Law and Sadie Frost's daughter. Kate lives with her daughter in St. John's Wood, London.
Kate dabbles in music, to say the least. She has provided vocals for Primal Scream and has appeared in music videos for Primal Scream, Elton John, Marianne Faithfull, and Johnny Cash. And it doesn’t stop there. Kate has also cowritten several songs with Pete Doherty and appeared as a sexy pole dancer in the White Stripes' video for "I Just Don’t Know What to Do with Myself," directed by Sofia Coppola. The elusive and rarely interviewed model said she plans to record an album before turning 35. And now that she has celebrated this birthday, we wonder if perhaps the Forbes second-highest-earning supermodel has a new career ahead of her.
