Kiara Kabukuru was born on July 31, 1975 in Kampala, Uganda. After social and political turbulence in Uganda forced her family to flee, Kiara emigrated to the United States with the aid of Amnesty International and United Way. Her family settled in Los Angeles, and at age 16, fashion photographer Bill Bodwell scouted her at a local shopping center.
