Get to Know...Kiara Kabukuru

KIARA KABUKURU:
Coming from Uganda. That was traumatic to say the least. I spent the first six years of my life in Uganda. And at the time there was major civil unrest. My parents were involved in funding rebel groups. My dad name ended up on a list of people to get rid of. We were separated from my parents. At that point my parents had lost all of their money. We were all in danger. Four kids running and hiding out in Kenya for about a year. Not knowing what was next. We had one life, and then suddenly it disappeared. Literally in a day. Luckily, my parents met these wonderful people at Amnesty International and connected us with this church in Los Angeles. And they did everything in their power. They're actually the ones who raised money to get us over to the States. They got us a house. We lived rent free. They got my father a job. He became an accountant. Us four kids had to learn English, which is not a language that we spoke. Definitely different circumstances than anybody else we knew in school. I think that I have an interesting perspective. I think I belong to both the haves and the have nots. At the same time which made me want harmony and peace. I think what stops that from happening is seeing ourselves as separate from others.

I love people. I love, love. I love the five senses. I love music. I think it's the highest art. I love the seasons. I love sleeping. I love dreaming. I love telling stories. I love hearing stories. I love pampering myself.

In my culture one has a responsibility of serving your elders. And teaching the youngsters. And in so doing, serving all. I don't think you quite really have anything unless you can give it to somebody else.
