Giving Back: Joy Bryant & Stoked

Transcript

JOY BRYANT
Hi, I'm Joy Bryant here for Modelinia. Come snowboarding with me and learn about a really awesome organization, Stoked Mentoring.

MALE ONE
Stoked.

MALE TWO
We're Stoked.

MALE THREE
Stoked, baby.

MALE FOUR
Stoked.

MALE ONE
Stoked is awesome. It's so much fun.

FEMALE ONE
Who is totally Stoked? Everybody awake? Yes? Everybody has some...

JOY BRYANT
When people asked me what's Stoked all about. Remember that organization, big brother, big sister? It's kind of like that, only with action sports thrown into the mix. We're going to take some kids from LA up to the slopes. Teach them how to snowboard. This is one of the few mentoring programs where the mentee and mentor can kind of be on the same level.

MALE TWO
We've been mentor and mentee for about 3 years.

MALE THREE
We both didn't how to snowboard at all.

MALE TWO
We went snowboarding for the first time together. And so we progressed together.

MALE THREE
You know, it's kind of what Stoked is about, you know. You both improve.

MALE TWO
A lot...

MALE THREE
Outside of snowboarding and inside of snowboarding.

MALE TWO
Yes.

JOY BRYANT
It's not like you have someone kind of, you know, “You must do this and I'm going to drive away in my Range Rover.” I wish this organization was around when I was a kid.

First let me tell you a little bit about myself I grew up in the South Bronx. My mom was 15 when she had me and I was raised by my grandmother. I greatly benefited from programs like Stoked.

It wasn’t as cool as snowboarding. But if it weren’t for those organizations I wouldn’t be here.

FEMALE TWO
Being in Stoked has made me more comfortable with who I am.

JOY BRYANT
Anytime you take young people out of their environment just for a day to open up and experience life, you know, I think it's just such a beautiful thing.

FEMALE THREE
In five years I imagine myself being in college.

MALE FIVE
I see myself definitely starting a family.

MALE SIX
Playing quarterback for the Eagles and my jersey number is number five.

JOY BRYANT
Never let anyone deter from your vision for yourself. Life throws you curve balls and it's really about how you take those hits, you get knocked down and get back up and you go after what you want.

EMALE TWO
I do want to be a mentor. I want to share with someone else what I experienced now that I'm a mentee.

JOY BRYANT
It was a really, really amazing experience and I'm so happy that I'm not only involved in the organization, but I got to come today. I'm sure going to go up for one last run. And then call it a day. Stoked!

I just crawled all the way from LA just be on Modelinia.
