VERONICA WEBB
What's up? I'm Veronica Webb and welcome to Modelinia Fashion Week TV. I'm gonna take you inside those tents right there at Bryant Park, and show you everything that's hot, that's new, what the designers are doing, what the models are doing, what the socialites are doing, what the rich people are doing, what the poor people are doing. Tonight is gonna be fantastic. I'll introduce you to my girlfriend Rachel Roy who's, uh, an amazing designer, and I know you're gonna love her stuff. Then Coco Rocha is gonna interview Anna Sui. And lucky us, we get to talk to Brooklyn Decker who just got the cover of Sport Illustrated. And we'll talk about swimsuit trends. But first, I want to introduce you to my homey, Bianca Posterli. Bianca.
BIANCA POSTERLI
Hi.
VERONICA WEBB
What's up?
BIANCA POSTERLI
How are you?
VERONICA WEBB
Bianca is the blogger, the busy bee, who knows all the buzz in the tent. She's our Modelinia blogger and she's gonna bring us up today.
BIANCA POSTERLI
Well, you know, unfortunately, right now, there is some sad news going around the tent. Alexander McQueen was reported that he passed away today in London.
VERONICA WEBB
Well, our heart goes out to his colleagues and his family. That's, that's really terrible news. He's a very young man and very talented. He'll be incredibly missed.
BIANCA POSTERLI
He will be very missed.
VERONICA WEBB
What's up this week? What are you doing?
BIANCA POSTERLI
Well, this morning, I got up bright and early to go to BCBG. We went to Heidi Klum's maternity launch party, so that was exciting. She launched two new collections for pregnant women.
VERONICA WEBB
Now that one, Heidi, I have to tell you, like, you know, uh, my kids are 16 months apart, I have two, but I'm just like fat for two years. It took me two years to get back in my jeans. Heidi, it's like a week, she drinks a diet coke, and, you know, she's like...
BIANCA POSTERLI
She's good to go.
VERONICA WEBB
...back, back in her micro mini. I don't know how she does it. So are you a sucker for fashion?
BIANCA POSTERLI
I am. I definitely, yeah.
VERONICA WEBB
Happy Valentines Day.
BIANCA POSTERLI
Thank you. Oh, you be my valentine?
VERONICA WEBB
(STAMMERS) Why not?
BIANCA POSTERLI
Okay, perfect.
VERONICA WEBB
Rachel Roy's show is on Valentines Day.
BIANCA POSTERLI
It is. It is. (UNINTELLIGIBLE)
VERONICA WEBB
And so is Catherine Malandrino's.
BIANCA POSTERLI
All the good ones.
VERONICA WEBB
Fantastic. I'm so happy to have Bianca with me.
BIANCA POSTERLI
Thank you.
VERONICA WEBB
And now we're gonna take a look at Rachel Roy. You're gonna like this.
BIANCA POSTERLI
I know. I'm excited.
VERONICA WEBB
Let me introduce you to my friend Rachel Roy. Rachel is a designer. She's a working mom. She's a neighbor and she's a great friend, and a fabulous designer.
RACHEL ROY
Thank you for that introduction.
VERONICA WEBB
When I met Rachel, she was sweeping the floor at Rocawear. And it was her job to get rappers to wear...
RACHEL ROY
But I'm still sweeping the floor. (LAUGH)
VERONICA WEBB
Yeah, but now it doesn't say Rocawear, it says, Rachel Roy.
RACHEL ROY
Right, right.
VERONICA WEBB
She's in the big time. Every, you know, everybody can find something and it's at a great price, I have to tell you.
RACHEL ROY
Lots of cute things and lots of products, but it keeps me very busy, jewelry, um, handbag, shoes and clothing. Love it.
VERONICA WEBB
So, it's pre-fall where, like, Rachel's collection this Valentines Day you're showing.
RACHEL ROY
Valentines Day, yeah.
VERONICA WEBB
You know, Valentines Day so...
RACHEL ROY
I hope you're coming with your valentine.
VERONICA WEBB
This is amazing. This is amazing.
RACHEL ROY
I love that. That's really one of my favorites. I'm not a huge fur girl, as you know.
VERONICA WEBB
Right.
RACHEL ROY
So, uh, we wanted to come up with a concept of how do I get the opulence and richness of her without using fur. But it's all made out of little chiffon strips and it's just beautiful and I love it and, hopefully, everyone else will too. It takes so much sewing, uh, to get one garment.
VERONICA WEBB
The dominant trend from your collection.
RACHEL ROY
Mm, great question. I don’t know. I guess I'd have to process that for a while and absolutely feeling pants and interesting shapes in pants.
VERONICA WEBB
There's amazing beading here. Um...
RACHEL ROY
I love that. Yeah, so, I mean, you know, if you, if you look at it, you can kind of see the inspiration of the desert.
VERONICA WEBB
It looks like, it looks like silver pebbles in a stream. It's just gorgeous.
RACHEL ROY
It's beautiful. It's, um, just the texture velvet.
VERONICA WEBB
And then, this is a new take on embellishment because you're using a couple different, um, fabrics in the same, in, in the same color way in one skirt.
RACHEL ROY
Yeah. So, a gold, um, leather, some embroideries and the idea of texture upon texture upon texture to get a richness.
VERONICA WEBB
And then, Moroccan military, I mean, you really see it here in his jacket. It's just gorgeous.
RACHEL ROY
And this fabric, I'm calling the alien fabric. And it's...
VERONICA WEBB
Alien as in Sigourney Weaver, alien as in... (LAUGH)
RACHEL ROY
And here are some of the ideas behind the fabric manipulation for the non fur.
VERONICA WEBB
Mm-hmm.
RACHEL ROY
And how that got started.
VERONICA WEBB
Now, this is, this is the inspiration board.
RACHEL ROY
So, this is what I show my hair and makeup team to get them kind of feeling, uh, what I'm feeling. I love make-up and I love the transformation that you can have with makeup. So, I do love a smokey eye and we're playing with, um, a new take on the smokey eye.
VERONICA WEBB
What's your favorite trick for looking good on the (WORD?).
RACHEL ROY
You know, I love a trench dress. And um, you can get them anywhere. A red lip goes a long way to, to lift the spirit.
VERONICA WEBB
Mm hmm.
RACHEL ROY
There's lots of little things you can do.
VERONICA WEBB
Why did you choose the piece that you chose to close, close the show with?
RACHEL ROY
Actually, I haven't chosen it yet, to be honest to with you.
VERONICA WEBB
See, we're early. (LAUGH) I know you have this T-shirt on 'cause we have talk about this.
RACHEL ROY
Yeah, this is the CFDA, uh, T-shirt that we're doing for Haiti and they will be on my Web site. The whole point of Fashion Week is to give a fresh idea and a new idea so that customers, um, can be excited about fashion. Whatever your taste, whatever you're into, I'm sure you'll find at this Fashion Week.
VERONICA WEBB
I can wait to see Rachel's show on Valentines Day. But what do you wear? I mean, if you got a front row seat, you got to look up-to-date. So, we're gonna catch up with Kalyn Hemphill, who's one of the winners of Models of the Runway, and do some front row shopping for some front row fashion.
KALYN HEMPHILL
Hey, Modelinia, you are watching Front Row Fashion. And we're here at Macy's in New York City. My name is Kalyn Hemphill and I'm here with style expert Abbey Samet. And she's gonna show me six different looks that I can wear at the front row of any fashion show this week. So, let's get started. Let's, show me...
ABBEY SAMET
Absolutely.
KALYN HEMPHILL
...show me what you got. (LAUGH)
ABBEY SAMET
Okay. Let's go. Well, first, right behind you here, right.
KALYN HEMPHILL
Oh, okay.
ABBEY SAMET
We're at BCBG and, uh, I was thinking you would look great in this really fitted banded skirt.
KALYN HEMPHILL
Ooh, I love that.
ABBEY SAMET
So, yeah, it's got a great, stunning detail to it. And I was thinking with T-shirt would be really great. And there's a really cool one over here. So, I think …
KALYN HEMPHILL
It's got a lot of personality. (LAUGH)
ABBEY SAMET
Yeah. I think this two things tucked in will look really great. So, I think we should try this on and then we've got jacket over here. So, we think this jacket, it's gonna be really great. I think it will look good on you. It's got this...
KALYN HEMPHILL
(OVERLAPPING) That's really cute.
ABBEY SAMET
...sharp shoulder detail and the asymmetrical drape, you know, a little bit shorter in the back.
KALYN HEMPHILL
Yeah.
ABBEY SAMET
So we think it's kind of the perfect accent to finish off this outfit. So...
KALYN HEMPHILL
We're going to put it on?
ABBEY SAMET
Yeah. Let's go try it on.
KALYN HEMPHILL
Okay.
ABBEY SAMET
Hi, Kalyn. That looks great.
KALYN HEMPHILL
Hey. Thank you.
ABBEY SAMET
I think we picked a great look for Fashion Week day one.
KALYN HEMPHILL
I do, too.
ABBEY SAMET
I love the sharp shoulder jacket.
KALYN HEMPHILL
Mm hmm.
ABBEY SAMET
Its detail is really amazing. It's really fresh and new. And this asymmetrical detail is really great, just kind of like easy, flowy, (SIC) very nonchalant, chic. We love that. And then we have the banded skirt, um, which really sucks you in and it's really nice. And it's very comfortable, isn't it?
KALYN HEMPHILL
Mm hmm. Very comfortable.
ABBEY SAMET
And the studding detail is really new and neat. I think it makes it a little bit different than every thing else that out there. The T-shirt is really cute. It's short-sleeve, right?
KALYN HEMPHILL
Yep.
ABBEY SAMET
So if you do need to, you know, take it off, sometimes it gets hot, you take it off. And then, of course, you have your platform, your studded shoe, uh, to give you a little height, not that you need it.
KALYN HEMPHILL
(LAUGH) Yeah. Abbey, I really like this look. I think it's, sort of, the great way to start Fashion Week. I love the sharp shoulder, the banded skirt. Everything is perfect. Tell us what we're gonna see tomorrow, for the rest of the week...
ABBEY SAMET
Well, for tomorrow, we've got a great shot of color. We've got some neon, brights and some artistic-type prints. Um, and the rest of the week we've got harem pants, we've got lace, we've got stripes. We've really got a little bit of everything. So we're gonna pull you together and you're gonna look fabulous in the front row.
KALYN HEMPHILL
Awesome. I can't wait to put it all on. And be sure to tune in tomorrow for more Front Row Fashion.
VERONICA WEBB
Don’t' move. We've got some highlights for you from the BCBG Max Azria show. This is good. I've got Coco Rocha for you who's been on every magazine, every runway, every campaign, knows a lot about fashion, sweet girl, totally normal, which is great because that makes it relatable and you'll learn something listening to her. She's gonna take us to meet designer Anna Sui.
COCO ROCHA
Hey, it's Coco Rocha here. We're at Anna Sui's showroom. We're just about to have our interview with her. I'm very excited because she's actually the first designer I walked for about six years ago. In fact, that was the show where Naomi Campbell was walking and I had no clue who she was, but that is okay. I have been forgiven. So let's go. Hurry up. Follow me.
ANNA SUI
Hi, Coco. Great to see you.
COCO ROCHA
And great to see you. How are you?
ANNA SUI
Very good.
COCO ROCHA
Are you excited about everything?
ANNA SUI
Um, yeah. This is the point where I start getting excited. Like, for the last month, I've been really nervous, really scared, um, really stressed out, but right now is the fun part. It's when everything comes together.
COCO ROCHA
We were doing our research and your first runway was 1991, right?
ANNA SUI
That's right.
COCO ROCHA
So how do you think of a new idea? It's always different. How do you do it?
ANNA SUI
It's usually the fabrics that excite me. But I think if you look at my inspiration boards here, this year I decided it was going to be American arts and crafts. I start selecting prints and designing prints, selecting colors, and then here's the end result. So I think if you look at the clothes, they always reflect exactly what my initial inspiration was. American arts and crafts is something that we all grew up with. It's something that's been handmade for a hundred years...
COCO ROCHA
Mm hmm.
ANNA SUI
...and made exactly the same way. I remember houses in downtown Detroit that had this beautiful tile parts and fireplaces. And so we researched it and there's a place in Detroit called Pewabic tile. We do jewelry out of their tiles. So, I mean, this is like a perfect example of arts and crafts. I think people need to use their hands and they need to put themselves into what they're doing.
COCO ROCHA
Well, that's the thing. For you, everyone knows you're always involved in the patterns, in the colors and putting it together. And you make your patterns, right?
ANNA SUI
Yes.
COCO ROCHA
It's not something you found in a book?
ANNA SUI
Mm hmm.
COCO ROCHA
So how do you choose, like, these colors are going with these colors, but we make sure that it's still Anna Sui, we make sure it's still fresh?
ANNA SUI
A part of it is, stem from the inspiration.
COCO ROCHA
Yeah.
ANNA SUI
I kind of hold myself up into my office every weekend for about three weeks and just start collecting pictures. I started thinking, okay, what's the essence of this? If I see something then I try to understand what it is that I'm attracted to and I try to take the essence of it. A lot of these things are handmade. Every nail is hand-hammered in.
COCO ROCHA
Yeah.
ANNA SUI
I mean, they made the old-fashion way. If you look at my inspiration board, one of the initial things that I got excited about was this cabinet. As you see it's all studded too.
COCO ROCHA
Mm hmm.
ANNA SUI
And the shapes are all art nouveau. So I try to capture that same essence in these accessories. If there's something that I'm excited about, I try to translate it into my world.
COCO ROCHA
I don't think a lot of people realize how much work goes into a shoe like that. Thank you, Anna, so much for letting us be here and see your collection before it's actually even out.
ANNA SUI
Thank you. It's so great to see you as always.
COCO ROCHA
(OVERLAPPING) Thank you.
ANNA SUI
Hi. I'm Anna Sui with Coco, and you're watching Fashion Week TV.
VERONICA WEBB
The weather has been one of the biggest stories at Fashion Week and not because we're doing fall clothes in the spring, but because it's been snowing like crazy. But lucky for us, we're gonna catch up with Brooklyn Decker who just got Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue and she's gonna tell us what's up in the world of swimsuit.
BROOKLYN DECKER
Hi, Modelinia, Brooklyn Decker here. My first big (WORD?) was Sports Illustrated and obviously I know a lot about swimsuit for my job. I'm gonna tell you about my top five picks for swimsuits for this season. First of all, stud. I love studs on anything and they make a suit just look really cool. Second of all, fringe. Fringe is really cool because it could look country, it could look western. Alexander Wang, he's done it on his shoes. You'll see it in fashion everywhere, very cool.
BROOKLYN DECKER (CONTINUED)
Third of all, hmm, what do I like, bright colors. I love pinks, yellows, blues, purples, makes the skin tone look great. It's really easy for the beach. Fourth, I'm gonna say, embellishments.
FEMALE
Oh, well, that's nice.
BROOKLYN DECKER
Sort of gold beads, anything like that, because that stuff is so easy to just throw a caftan on and go out to dinner on the beach, day and night really easy. And my fifth trend, I'm gonna say is the monokini.
JACQUELINE JABLONSKI
Wow.
BROOKLYN DECKER
It's a way to cover it up, be a little bit more conservative but you still have the cutout, so you're still kind of sexy. Those are my top five trends in swimwear for the summer. Good luck and happy shopping.
VERONICA WEBB
One thing about models, they tend to have had very interesting lives. A new face on the scene is Daisy Lowe. She started, I mean, I shouldn't say new because she started modeling at the age of two. This week, she's everywhere on the runways of Fashion Week. We're gonna meet Daisy Lowe up close and personal.
DAISY LOWE
I moved to New York in January. And my whole thing about this place was, I've lived in, like, a shoebox when I was the first, it was my first place out of home when I left London. And so when I came to New York, I said, you know what, I want to treat myself to a big space where I can kind of dance around and then (UNINTELLIGIBLE). I'm gonna put it out, this terrific mess, (STAMMERS) first, but this is kind of where I would eat if I have the chance to actually sit down at the dinner table without having my dog try and eat it. And, um, my shoes, my staircase, um, this is my living room with my good-old '70s bar which is, uh, really great find. My place is sort of a halfway house for creative Londoners.
DAISY LOWE (CONTINUED)
Um, and, um, I've got like my, a really good friend, Kate Ross (SP?) who's this amazing graphic designer ended up staying here for like a month or two. And she ended up making me that just to say thank you which is, um, a really cool little graphic design piece at the cabinet (UNINTELLIGIBLE) for I've planning to move back to London for awhile, but, um, then, I bought my puppy, that's Monty. And, um, here he is in a tuxedo. He thought he dressed to the occasion. (LAUGH)
DAISY LOWE (CONTINUED)
Yeah, this is one of my favorite books that my lovely boyfriend bought me, uh, when I was in a bad mood (LAUGH) to cheer me up. But, um, I just adore Vivienne Westwood so much. Um, so these are my, a pair of my Alejandro shoes. They're so good. They're so good. I bought them in blue as well. They're just the greatest shoes ever. He's such a genius. Me and Will have matching egg and bacon Converse. They're pretty cool. (STAMMERS) You're missing the egg and bacon. That's the best part.
DAISY LOWE (CONTINUED)
Yeah, this is kind of my little space, really. It's, I just, I put like those superheroes up to protect me when I'm here on my own and some cool little reminders of that, that, you know, the universe is bigger than just planet Earth.
VERONICA WEBB
All right. We got the highlights for you from the Richard Chai show. What's up? It's Veronica Webb for Modelinia Fashion Week TV. Now, it's time to meet a woman who is known by a single name, Iman.
IMAN
I was raised in Somalia, which is a country in East Africa. My father was an ambassador in, uh, in the Middle East, uh, specifically in Sudan, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. We came back to Somalia because Somalia in 1969, because Somalia had a military coup. It was a very scary time for my whole family. People who were caught by the government were being either executed or put in jail. So in the middle of night, one night, my mother decided that we should flee the country. And overnight, my life was changed from being, uh, an ambassador's daughter to a refugee.
IMAN (CONTINUED)
I'm attending Nairobi University with two jobs on the side, this man stopped me in the street. The man was Peter Beard. He discovered me. He asked me if I have ever been photographed. I have never been seen a fashion magazine in my life so I have no concept what he was talking about. He said, I'll pay you. And I said, how much? He said, well, how much do you want? And all I could think of was the tuition for, for the university and I said, $8,000, and he said, you got it. When I landed in New York, uh, it was 1975 and I remember there was a garbage strike so there was a lot of garbage. I thought, this is it, this is metropolis? It was worse than any African country. I swear.
IMAN (CONTINUED)
My first job was for American Vogue, so I have really no concept. I didn't know how to put on my makeup. I didn’t know how to do my hair, and the makeup artist asked me a very perplexing question. He asked me, did you bring your own foundation? I have no idea what foundation was so I said, no. He didn't ask there the Caucasian model, he only asked me. So he, he proceeded to do my makeup. And when I looked at the mirror, I was flabbergasted because it didn't even look (STAMMERS) like my skin color anymore. It looked like grayish, uh, color picture because the image that was there was not me and was altered in a way that was not, um, good for me or for my skin race.
IMAN (CONTINUED)
They don't care about how you look in real life. It's how you look in pictures, and that is not how I saw myself. I took it up on myself that I'm gonna change people's mind about this. It's been a journey. I'm Iman and you're watching Modelinia.
NOOT SEEAR
So I'm gonna take you to one of my favorite jewelry stores, C'est Magnifique on MacDougal. This is my boy, Alfie. He runs the store. He also goes around the world and collects vintage jewelry.
ALFIE
That's Fazool. Knock yourself out.
NOOT SEEAR
I used to spend hours and hours and hours and hours over here. This is a ring that Alfie made here, one of my favorite rings. Alfie makes this all from scratch. Hopefully, in the future, you're gonna see the Alfie-Noot collaboration. This is one of my little gems in New York City, this beautiful, beautiful store that I spend far too much time and money in. This is my favorite store, Bess. Come on in. I want to show you around. They take vintage clothes here and stud them. The studs they have are old school. They're not that super shiny. Everything is very rock and roll. They have old motorcycles boots. I clearly got my own boots here. I'm probably gonna live in them all winter. The moccasins, these are super comfortable.
They also have a great range of jewelry here, some beautiful, beautiful pieces. And they got really naughty, sexy, little booty shorts. Hello. I don't even know where they find all these. This store is located on 292 Lafayette. You guys want to come and check it out. It's definitely something to see. (UNINTELLIGIBLE) All right. See you later.
VERONICA WEBB
Modelinia Fashion Week TV is going to take you inside of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue launch party.
BROOKLYN DECKER
The cover is so huge because it's one girl a year. I'm still shaking and you can see my hands are, like, yeah, shaking and, and I'm nervous and excited and shocked. And just like I'm so lucky.
ANNE V
I think that's the only magazine that's pretty much all about models and who you are. It's not about any fashion. It's not about any article. It's really about models. It's amazing to be a part of it.
CHERYL BURKE
Sports Illustrated really just defines healthy bodies and, you know, people look at that and they're just like really motivated to start working out or to stay fit and stay healthy, especially young women.
ANNE V
They look so painless and beautiful. There's a lot of work that goes into shooting this.
VERONICA WEBB
Fashion Week is in full force. So you know what? Come with me 'cause we're gonna look at some highlights of the Vena Cava show. Well, that's it for day one of fashion week. Tune in tomorrow for visits with designers Christian Siriano, Catherine Malandrino and a whole lot more. I hope you had fun. I loved being with you. It's Veronica Webb for Modelinia of Fashion Week TV. We'll see you tomorrow.
FEMALE
I like the cut, colors, the fabric.
