VERONICA WEBB
Hi, it's Veronica Webb from Modelinia Fashion Week TV. It is day five in the tents here at Bryant Park, and we've got some good stuff for you. I'm gonna take you backstage to meet designer Cynthia Rowley just before her collection. Coco Rocha's gonna take you to meet Erin Fetherston, and we have exclusive coverage of the event that she threw for Haiti on Friday night. If that isn't enough, we'll visit some NYC hot spots, catch up with faces of fashion and a whole lot more. But first, we have to check in with Bianca Posterli, Modelinia's expert blogger.
BIANCA POSTERLI
Thanks, Veronica. One of the biggest fashion events this weekend was Naomi Campbell's Fashion For Relief Show for the benefit of Haiti. She brought models, celebrities and designers alike to walk the benefit cause. And at the very end, there was this special surprise tribute to Alexander McQueen. At the (WORD?) show, there were all of the typical bright colors from the brand that you can expect and, of course, preppy is back in. Modelinia spotted our favorite Behati Prinsloo walking and she definitely stole the show.
BIANCA POSTERLI (CONTINUED)
Backstage at Peter Som, purple was definitely the color of the day. Modelinia chatted with Meghan Collison who told us that she was absolutely in love with her purple lips. Also, we were backstage at Herve Leger Show, which is always a model favorite. We talked to some of the girls about just how it feels to wear one of the designs.
JACQUELYN JABLONSKI
They fit your body...
BOTH
Body.
JACQUELYN JABLONSKI
...perfectly. Just feel gorgeous.
BOTH
Like a part of it. Yeah.
ANN KENNY
It's actually really comfortable.
JACQUELYN JABLONSKI
It's really flattering.
BIANCA POSTERLI
And, Veronica, it's been a huge week for Heidi Klum. She started off Fashion Week launching her brand new maternity lines, then walked in the (WORD?) collection and even judged the Project Runway finale show. And also, Veronica, we went to Alexander Wang, which proved again and again to be a favorite for models and editors alike. We spoke with Agyness Deyn backstage who gave us the scoop on just a little project that she's working on.
AGYNESS DEYN
It's a lifestyle, um, Web site for, uh, young people. I'm doing it with my best friend Fiona and, uh, yeah, it should, um, be good.
BIANCA POSTERLI
That's all for now, Veronica, but we will be back tomorrow with more model news.
VERONICA WEBB
Well, Bianca, thanks for all that juicy scoop. Now our fabulous Coco Rocha is gonna take us inside designer Erin Fetherston's studio.
COCO ROCHA
Hey, Coco Rocha here with Erin Fetherston. You are watching Modelinia Fashion Week TV. Let's just get into things. Are we nervous?
ERIN FETHERSTON
I'm not nervous yet. I'm really into the excited stage. Um, it's been a really fun week.
COCO ROCHA
Mm hmm.
ERIN FETHERSTON
My collection came in a few days ago, all the pieces. So I've just been working on the styling, putting the looks together...
COCO ROCHA
What was the new inspiration of the season for you?
ERIN FETHERSTON
Well, it sort of just let the inspiration come to me. I think that might be one of my favorite parts because that's when I feel like you get to design the dream world and make clothes that come inspired from that place. I'm looking at that place this time. I roughly kind of started with Nico as an inspiration icon for the collection. She's this great singer who sing with Velvet Underground, was an Andy Warhol's Chelsea Girls. She has a very iconic look. And the time when women always wore dresses, she really only wore pant suits.
COCO ROCHA
Mm hmm.
ERIN FETHERSTON
And she had this tomboyish style but was super glamorous and had this real feminine allure. I just wanted this collection to have that kind of independence spirit.
COCO ROCHA
I know they're all your babies, but...
ERIN FETHERSTON
They're all my babies. (LAUGH)
COCO ROCHA
...but which was is, like, your favorite child?
ERIN FETHERSTON
This one I am very excited about. And my suspicion is that I'm gonna open the show with this piece. It's a cape coat. Really beautiful wool, cashmere, which I piped in leather. I lined the underside of it with lace. So in the front, you just, kind of, see a bit of that peeking out and on the back you got this great detail. Lace was a material that I use a lot this season, but in combination with other fabric. I like that, sort of, feminine in position on top of something that's tailored.
ERIN FETHERSTON (CONTINUED)
This was another really cool piece. Again, its combination with lace, but this is black leather seamed together with lace in stripes. I'm really into the silhouette this season because I started to do a much longer dress, kind of mid-calf, which I think is looking really cool. We're gonna show it with boots. Here's a few good examples of that, this party dress. And then I love this. This is a print that I developed with my friend, Calla Haynes, who is a great print designer. I printed this on with stripes (UNINTELLIGIBLE). It has a (WORD?) thread running through it. So it's a print on top of a woven motif, which I think gives a lot of depth, plunging neckline. It was fun.
COCO ROCHA
Whenever I see your dresses, you really think of like what a lady should look like. Do you ever feel like, you know, I'm gonna just stick away from that, or is that your staple?
ERIN FETHERSTON
I think it's totally my staple. I love doing romantic feminine dresses. I like ladies to look pretty. I think that you can have what an attitude and edge, and I think that there's definitely, kind of, a rock and roll Bohemian spirit present in this collection. I think it's a little bit more relaxed in doing a lot of blazers on top of that loose dress. So I think that there is this, sort of, Bohemian decontracte look happening and I think that is a good of a new territory for me to go into, but it feels really natural. But I do love making very feminine clothes.
COCO ROCHA
Thank you so much for letting us to be here today. I know you're a very busy girl, so I won't keep you in, but congratulations and good luck. We'll see you soon.
ERIN FETHERSTON
Oh, thank you so much. It's so good to see you.
COCO ROCHA
Nice seeing you.
ERIN FETHERSTON
Hi, I'm Erin Fetherston and you're watching Fashion Week TV.
VERONICA WEBB
Time to catch up with model, Kalyn Hemphill, so we can see what she's wearing in the Front Row today.
KALYN HEMPHILL
Hey, Modelinia. You're watching Front Row Fashion and I'm Kalyn Hemphill. I'm here at Macy's again today, fashion expert, Abbey Samet. Yesterday, I wore an awesome neon dress with a really cool overcoat. It was a great slash of color. I loved it so much. And we're day three. I am excited to see what you pulled.
ABBEY SAMET
Well, I have a couple of great ideas and I think you're gonna really like this look. It's, um, a denim-based, denim bottom, so you're gonna be comfortable...
KALYN HEMPHILL
(OVERLAPPING) Yey.
ABBEY SAMET
...that's really important.
KALYN HEMPHILL
Yeah.
ABBEY SAMET
This is one of the jeans I was thinking.
KALYN HEMPHILL
Hmm.
ABBEY SAMET
It's got this really cool motocross detail. It's got...
KALYN HEMPHILL
(OVERLAPPING) And I really like the wash.
ABBEY SAMET
Yeah. It's really fun.
KALYN HEMPHILL
(OVERLAPPING) Really cool.
ABBEY SAMET
It's kind of like a tie-dye.
KALYN HEMPHILL
Yeah.
ABBEY SAMET
And then we've got this great zipper back pocket detail.
KALYN HEMPHILL
Cool.
ABBEY SAMET
And I was thinking the perfect item with the, this studded vest. It's got great zipper detail and studding detail. I think this one will fit you and look great...
KALYN HEMPHILL
(OVERLAPPING) Yeah.
ABBEY SAMET
...match the jean. And then we definitely want to layer something underneath, so...
KALYN HEMPHILL
Right.
ABBEY SAMET
...we think this black top will be easy. So let's go try it on.
KALYN HEMPHILL
Okay.
ABBEY SAMET
Wow, Kalyn, that looks great. Are you comfortable finally?
KALYN HEMPHILL
I am. I am. I love it.
ABBEY SAMET
I love this look because it's really got a lot of trends going on, but it's still chic and you're not over doing it. So we've got this great studded bootie in black suede and you got the jeans tucked in into the boot. I love the stitching detail. It's sort of like motocross inspired on your knee. And at the back pocket, there's some great zipper detail and that really ties nicely back to this vest just layered over a simple black long sleeve top, really comfortable and easy.
KALYN HEMPHILL
Yeah. And it's edgy at the same time. I like it.
ABBEY SAMET
(STAMMERS) Absolutely.
KALYN HEMPHILL
So tell us a little bit about what we're gonna see tomorrow.
ABBEY SAMET
Well, tomorrow we've got a really different look, very different from this.
KALYN HEMPHILL
(OVERLAPPING) Cool.
ABBEY SAMET
It's really a, a feminine girly look that can take you from day to evening. So we think you're really gonna love that one.
KALYN HEMPHILL
Well, I am very excited to see it. We'll see you tomorrow on Front Row Fashion.
VERONICA WEBB
Here are some highlights from some of the latest shows.
[B-ROLL]
VERONICA WEBB
Hi. It's Veronica Webb from Modelinia Fashion Week TV. Right now, we're gonna go backstage with Cynthia Rowley. We'll hang out with literally right until the moment her show started. Her fall 2010 collection is really beautiful. It's innovative, it's moody, it's dark and full of a lot of great ideas. I think you're really going to enjoy it. Hey, everybody. This is Cynthia Rowley. Look at her. She's so cool. She's so calm. She's so collective. (LAUGH) All these chaos is going on around you. Your fall 2010 show is about to start any second now.
CYNTHIA ROWLEY
You know the feeling, right, being up backstage?
VERONICA WEBB
I've never had my own selection.
CYNTHIA ROWLEY
But you know that whole idea of being backstage, there's no dress rehearsal, so it's just like go with it, you know?
VERONICA WEBB
It's kind of like life.
CYNTHIA ROWLEY
We hope it all comes together.
VERONICA WEBB
So tell me, Cynthia, what was the first time that you fell in love with fashion?
CYNTHIA ROWLEY
Coming to New York, you know, who can not be completely romanced...
VERONICA WEBB
(OVERLAPPING) Inspired, right?
CYNTHIA ROWLEY
...and inspired by being in New York?
VERONICA WEBB
(OVERLAPPING) What's the most inspiring thing about New York fashion wise?
CYNTHIA ROWLEY
People in other industries are taking more chances in fashion.
VERONICA WEBB
Well, Lady Gaga is a great example, right?
CYNTHIA ROWLEY
I think that Lady Gaga is really, I was gonna, I wanted to talk about her. She has, sort of, made fashion feel free again.
VERONICA WEBB
Right? What's the dominant trend coming out of the collection?
CYNTHIA ROWLEY
There's a lot of really handmade things, 'cause I do think that as clothing and as fashion gets to be more available, then for designers you really have to think about the craft a little bit more. And so there's lot of things with texture movement and things that are, look like fur but they're not. They're the hand-cut lace or silk tassel.
VERONICA WEBB
So hand-cut lace, silk tassels, things that look like fur but they're not, so embellishment?
CYNTHIA ROWLEY
Embellishment and texture and, sort of, fluffy and puffy and...
VERONICA WEBB
Fluffy and puffy and soft and just...
CYNTHIA ROWLEY
(LAUGH) Feathers.
VERONICA WEBB
Okay. So you're definitely into that handmade, crafty theme.
CYNTHIA ROWLEY
There are things that can only be done by a designer, in a way, you know, that is...
VERONICA WEBB
Yeah, than done by a sewer and by hand.
CYNTHIA ROWLEY
Yeah, and by hand.
VERONICA WEBB
Yeah.
CYNTHIA ROWLEY
A collection should be things like that, really special things. And then you can do other things that are more accessible.
VERONICA WEBB
Tell me about your favorite basic that you turned out this season.
CYNTHIA ROWLEY
I believe the stretch, suede, skinny, sweatpants. They're like leggings, but stretch suede. It's very cool.
VERONICA WEBB
Right. And you, and you throw them on with whatever, like...
CYNTHIA ROWLEY
Anything.
VERONICA WEBB
The piece that you decided to close the collection with, tell me about it and why did you choose it?
CYNTHIA ROWLEY
People say the opener and the closer shouldn't be the pinnacle of the show, like, you should have them peppered in there.
VERONICA WEBB
All right, so we'll just slip it in.
CYNTHIA ROWLEY
So, so my favorite is, uh, full, silk, tassel coat that looks like it would be a big fur coat, but it's also tassel fringe. And these leather elbow gloves, but they look, kind of, motocross. They're padded, so they're like tough girl, ladylike.
VERONICA WEBB
And then, under that, you have your suede, stretch, sweat pants that are the basic?
CYNTHIA ROWLEY
Yeah.
VERONICA WEBB
All right, good luck. You're minutes away from the show.
CYNTHIA ROWLEY
Thank you.
VERONICA WEBB
Good luck, good luck, good luck.
ANDREA DIANCONU
Hi. I'm Andrea Dianconu. We're at backstage at Cynthia Rowley. Hi, Modelinia.
VERONICA WEBB
Every fashionista knows that New York City is one of the hottest towns for shopping. And lucky us, model Julie Ordon is taking us to her favorite store at Lower Eastside, Blue & Cream.
JULIE ORDON
We're going to my favorite little secret spot. It's, hold on, Blue & Cream. Underwear, T-shirts, sandals, shoes, boots, clothes, they even have birthday cards. It's my secret location.
GALI BARRAZA
Gali. I'm a stylist. You know, I work with Julie sometimes, and we're friends.
JULIE ORDON
I always buy clothes, like, gray, black, white, like the simple things that are easy to mix with every other color. Gali knows, like, which color is good for me. I used to be blonde so blue was good, but not anymore.
JEFF GOLDSTEIN
Brand new MM6 for spring '09, Julie, the colors like you're seeing with (UNINTELLIGIBLE).
GALI BARRAZA
I love the...
JULIE ORDON
I like the cuts, the colors, the fabric, and it's easy to wear. You can wear it with jeans, leggings, skirt, make it high, though, wearing a belt or something.
GALI BARRAZA
Everything looks good on Julie, so it's really hard to decide at the end.
JULIE ORDON
I've never seen those Herve Leger like the new material. Older girls love those dress because it really sets up your whole body and it gives you beautiful shapes.
JEFF GOLDSTEIN
Trendsetters like Julie have a huge appetite for new (UNINTELLIGIBLE).
GALI BARRAZA
We don't shop trends, we shop what we like. We don't wear things that people wear.
JULIE ORDON
Oh, this is very comfortable too.
JEFF GOLDSTEIN
It's (UNINTELLIGIBLE). It's digital (UNINTELLIGIBLE) '09.
GALI BARRAZA
How cute is that? You're the new black.
JULIE ORDON
Were you supposed to, like, wear a tank underneath or just wear it like this? Well, this is Andy Warhol and this one, I don't know. But you know what's my trick to in a store to go faster? I usually never take off my shoes. If I try a dress on, I pull my jeans down, and I put on the dress.
GALI BARRAZA
I love them. Beautiful. Come on, let's see. Ready?
JULIE ORDON
I am an expert.
GALI BARRAZA
Okay, go.
JULIE ORDON
Oh, that's very cute. It's like Bohemian sexy.
GALI BARRAZA
Yeah.
JEFF GOLDSTEIN
Selling out, it's, it's Mary Kate-Ashley's.
JULIE ORDON
Oh, it's, uh, a future thing. (UNINTELLIGIBLE)
JEFF GOLDSTEIN
Back To The Future.
JULIE ORDON
Yeah, exactly. I love glasses.
JEFF GOLDSTEIN
So those are from 1950s.
JULIE ORDON
They're so cool.
JEFF GOLDSTEIN
Okay, so we'll talk about it.
JULIE ORDON
Perfect.
JEFF GOLDSTEIN
Ciao.
JULIE ORDON
Thank you.
VERONICA WEBB
Coco Rocha, my colleague and co-host, held a benefit Friday night for Haiti earthquake relief. Here in Modelinia Fashion Week TV, we have an exclusive, all access pass, and you're invited.
COCO ROCHA
Hey, I'm Coco Rocha. You are watching Modelinia. We are here at The Opera Gallery hosting event for LakayPAM. You are here for a great cause for the kids in Haiti, and we're going to start our auction. So here we go. Let's start these biddings. I want them exorbitantly high.
CEDRICK ROCHE
We're here to raise money to help poor children at water, food and health care and shelter. I'm Haitian, born and raised. My whole family lives down there, mom, brothers and sisters and so on.
CAROLINA BITTENCOURT
We all came together to help Haiti.
[FW.TV_EP.03]00:15:51 TINA MARIE CLARK
This is a perfect outlet to be able to give back, to be able to contribute in some way.
CEDRICK ROCHE
Everybody knows a Haitian somewhere. And the, the, the scale of the tragedy, I think all, all industries, all, all people, as long as you're a human being with a heart, you've, you felt the pain.
COCO ROCHA
This is probably and particularly one of the most important causes out there. It's people that need help and especially kids, you don't have anyone.
CEDRICK ROCHE
They need direction. They need support. And I fight to see them shine.
ERIC ALLOUCHE
I just want to, uh, say on behalf of Mr. Brainwash, he was generous enough to give two of the paintings of Madonna. So thank you for all coming and I hope, uh, you make a lot of kids happy by buying these paintings.
COCO ROCHA
And, please, we want money for these children, I'm begging. Have a great night. Thanks for hanging. You've been watching Modelinia Fashion Week TV.
VERONICA WEBB
Let's go take a look at some of the standout collections that made their debut in Bryant Park this weekend.
[B-ROLL]
VERONICA WEBB
This whole week is dedicated to fashion. But, of course, fashion is always inspired by art. We were lucky enough to catch up with model Kemp Muhl in her apartment to see where her creativity comes from.
KEMP MUHL
Well, it's, it's incredibly unofficial background. My mother was, um, a concert pianist. And when I was in the womb, she played a lot of furious concertos. And then I just grew up around this old piano. It was so out of tune, but I didn’t know the difference. So I would just, you know, sort of compose little melodies. Yes, stuff like that. We moved up to New York and, um, I met Sean, my boyfriend, and he gave me the most amazing illustrious musical education. I hadn't heard any hip-hop. I hadn't heard any, any music, really, other than very, like, (UNINTELLIGIBLE) white folk music.
KEMP MUHL (CONTINUED)
And so when I met Sean, he exposed me to, like, everything. He basically gave me the entire history of music that blew my mind. Then I immediately came back and started composing. This is our music studio and this is the guitar section. There are some from the '50s and, and someone sent him this from Kiss. This is my band with Sean, uh, the Goastt. It's an acronym for a play that I wrote when I was, like, eight, called the Ghost of a Saber-toothed Tiger. He found it in my apartment and thought it was funny. Here is one song. It's called Rainbows And Gasoline.
KEMP MUHL (CONTINUED)
The kind of music that I'm starting to do now is progressive, um, like jazz, pop, folk rock, Chinese traditional music. No. Sean and I just create this little new place of complete weirdness, you know, and nerdy music. You know, we're really into wordplay and puns. I like that line. Um, we're so nerdy (STAMMERS) uh, it's like this, um, wearing Freudian slips like evening gowns, taking guilt trips from town to town. Last night, we wrote a song about (WORD?) the lifespan of a cigarette. You know, we just have fun, like, we just, we write about anything. I'll just play you a little doodle that I'm, I've been working on.
KEMP MUHL (CONTINUED)
Composing is, I don't know. For me, it's actually a lot about the geometrical formations in my fingers. It's almost very visual for me. I don’t know, it's, it's very intimate experience. It's, it's nice. So then it goes on, uh, let's go to the drums and I'll try to play you one of the new beats somewhere and drums are definitely not my talent. So I'm, I'm just gonna show you the beats that I'm starting to learn. But that was humiliating. Let's move on. Oh, last but not least, um, tambourine. I put it on every song. And the triangle. I'm a professional triangle player. I think it's an exciting time, actually 'cause everything is so (WORD?) and so boring that it's time for something new.
VERONICA WEBB
Summer Reynolds, our environmental correspondent, caught up with Jason Wu and Christian Siriano to talk about their new green initiative with Aveda.
SUMMER RAYNE OAKES
He, Modelinia TV, this Summer Rayne Oakes and I am here behind the scenes of the Jason Wu Show. We're, how are you?
JASON WU
Hi. How are you doing?
SUMMER RAYNE OAKES
So everyone's filling up with their New York City tap water and their Aveda EarthLust reusable bottle. They are actually diverting over 7,300 water bottles. It's about getting all of those plastic bottles out of the landfill. This partnership that you have with Aveda, with the clean water initiative...
JASON WU
(OVERLAPPING) Yes.
SUMMER RAYNE OAKES
...can you tell me a little bit more about that?
JASON WU
Well, you know, I've been working with Aveda for the past couple of seasons and I love that Aveda brings that clean water initiative into the show because, you know, after each show, there's so much trash all over...
SUMMER RAYNE OAKES
(OVERLAPPING) Yeah.
JASON WU
...and you know, leaving out the water bottles, that was (STAMMERS) quite afraid to look at.
SUMMER RAYNE OAKES
Yeah.
JASON WU
That's a really great effort in saving our planet.
SUMMER RAYNE OAKES
Great. Well, thank you so much, Jason.
JASON WU
(OVERLAPPING) Thank you. Nice meeting you.
SUMMER RAYNE OAKES
I really appreciate it. Aveda's been doing clean water initiatives for quite a while and they have since raised close to $15 million for clean water projects. And they did it partially backstage at shows like Jason Wu and Christian Siriano. Guess where I am? (STAMMERS) It's all kind of (UNINTELLIGIBLE) and he's (STAMMERS) right over there. And everyone's, kind of, prodding around him, but we're gonna go and see if we could steal an interview. You partnered up with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection and Aveda...
CHRISTIAN SIRIANO
(OVERLAPPING) Of course, of course.
SUMMER RAYNE OAKES
...doing the water initiative which you were just like...
CHRISTIAN SIRIANO
(OVERLAPPING) Isn't it amazing?
SUMMER RAYNE OAKES
...throwing back the water bottle.
CHRISTIAN SIRIANO
Yes. Okay.
SUMMER RAYNE OAKES
It's great.
INTERVIEWER
I mean, have you tasted it? It tastes great.
SUMMER RAYNE OAKES
Oh my God, the tea is like delicious.
CHRISTIAN SIRIANO
Really good.
SUMMER RAYNE OAKES
Yeah.
CHRISTIAN SIRIANO
No. I mean, Aveda has been such a huge supporter of mine last season, and they always do such an amazing job and the environment is even an extra that we get on top of creating fashion, so. And I think it's great. And I think, you know, it's nice to kind of showcase that as much as you can.
SUMMER RAYNE OAKES
Yeah. Oh, great. Thank you so much.
CHRISTIAN SIRIANO
Thank you so much. Nice to see you.
SUMMER RAYNE OAKES
Okay. Nice to see you too. Good luck on the show.
CHRISTIAN SIRIANO
All right.
SUMMER RAYNE OAKES
It was great to see that Jayson Wu and Christian Siriano were both partnering up with Aveda's clean water initiative. Hey, guys, it's been fun hanging out with you. You're watching Modelinia Fashion Week TV.
ROSIE HUNTINGTON-WHITELEY
I eat as organically as possible, grow my own, um, use organic products. You know, I'm traveling all the time, so putting clean, natural foods into me and, and natural products on my body is really important. And I just did a picture for this charity called the Green Thing, which is a great Web site. It gives you one thing each week that you could do to help the environment. And it's really helpful if you're like me where you just have all this information that's confusing. And, uh, it's just, it's a very simple, laid-out things to do, um, and ways so we can help save the environment. You know, I love to use, um, organic products. There's a, there's a lot of products out there. You have to search a little harder for them.
ROSIE HUNTINGTON-WHITELEY (CONTINUED)
Jo has wonderful oils, some beautiful candles, body moisturizes and she had this new line called Every Day and which I really love to use. (WORD?) is beautiful and she's my boyfriend's mom, so. (LAUGH) And she's gonna be so happy. Hi, my name is Rosie and you've been hanging with me on Modelinia.
VERONICA WEBB
Now, let's check out some runway highlights. Well, that's it for today, everybody. Thank you for joining us here on Modelinia Fashion Week TV. I'm Veronica Webb. Enjoy your night and I will see you tomorrow.
