VERONICA WEBB
Hi, I'm Veronica Webb, and you're watching Modelinia Fashion Week TV. It's day six here in the tents of Bryant Park. Guess what, this is the brand new SLS AMG 2011 Gullwing car. Don't you want one? I do too. But they're already sold out. Don't feel bad 'cause we're gonna take you for an exclusive interview backstage with designer Zac Posen. We're also going into the studio with Lubov Azria. She's the creative director of the BCBG Max Azria Group. Frederic Fekkai stylist Andrea Rodman is gonna show you how to get a runway hairstyle at home.
VERONICA WEBB (CONTINUED)
We're gonna be going inside model Elisa Sednaoui's closet for a peek at her personal style. First, we have to check in with our expert Modelinia blogger Bianca Posterli and see what's going on behind the scenes.
BIANCA POSTERLI
Thank you, Veronica. As always, Marc Jacobs is a huge favorite of Fashion Week. And he showed his collection last night on time just as usual. Coco Rocha was backstage reporting for Modelinia TV, and she actually was mistaken for one of the models in the show, but Marc used all fresh faces as this season.
COCO ROCHA
I went running in there thinking that I had Marc Jacobs interview. And I was so excited to take you, but instead they thought I was one of the models and pulled me for first look.
BIANCA POSTERLI
Carlos Miele's selection was a burst of color, which is definitely what we're all dying for in the winter doldrums here. And he even had a fellow Brazilian model walk for him, Gracie Carvalho. Jill Stuart displayed her collection at the New York Public Library and it was definitely Kate Moss inspired. All of the hair was messy, kind of 3:00 AM party look, all like Kate Moss, so we were loving it. This morning we went backstage at Derek Lam where Eniko talked about just how it feels to wear Derek Lam clothes and the interesting places that she wears them.
ENIKO MIHALIK
Every time I wear his clothes I feel like it came before any age of a woman and for any occasions.
BIANCA POSTERLI
Mm hmm.
ENIKO MIHALIK
Sometimes I just put on one of those dresses that people would throw on for an evening. I put it on in a Sunday afternoon, at summertime, you just walk through the park because (STAMMERS) it feels good.
BIANCA POSTERLI
That's all for now, Veronica. But there's still two more days of Fashion Week, so we'll back with more model news.
VERONICA WEBB
Thank you, Bianca. Modelinia Fashion Week TV was invited to go behind the scenes with designer Zac Posen.
COCO ROCHA
Hey, Fashion Week TV. I am here with the lovely Zac. How are you?
ZAC POSEN
Vey good.
COCO ROCHA
Good. It is early.
ZAC POSEN
Very, very early.
COCO ROCHA
Yes.
ZAC POSEN
We're here at the Altman Building and, um, my second time show in the morning.
COCO ROCHA
I've heard a little rumor about not use long gowns? No long gowns this season?
ZAC POSEN
No long gowns on the runway this season. I think it's more special for the customers that buy their gowns. I think there's something proprietary about wearing a gown. And then I thought it felt sort of more modern right now in the runway and fresher to have this kind of focused fashion message where I'm really consistent with lengths and, you know, trying just to have that vocabulary with the people we've worked with every day.
COCO ROCHA
So, I've been to your show a few times.
ZAC POSEN
(OVERLAPPING) Yeah.
COCO ROCHA
Just a few. And every time, it's a different look.
ZAC POSEN
I know, well...
COCO ROCHA
So how was it, how do you...
ZAC POSEN
(OVERLAPPING) We...
COCO ROCHA
...you keep go anew?
ZAC POSEN
We keep evolving ourselves. I mean, it really starts before this with fabrics. I started finding all the fabrics in France, in Italy and even China. Um, you know, we start building board, textures, feelings. I wanted to create sort of, you know, a more, I'd say, urban quality to it.
COCO ROCHA
You always have a new project with the music and...
ZAC POSEN
(OVERLAPPING) Mm, mm.
COCO ROCHA
...the performance. So this season...
ZAC POSEN
Mm hmm.
COCO ROCHA
...we have a violinist?
ZAC POSEN
We do. (STAMMERS) We have Miri Ben-Ari. She's a hip-hop violinist.
COCO ROCHA
Huh.
ZAC POSEN
And she, she's, she's amazing. She's sort of the voice. And I think for a morning show, it's nice to have live music, to have her.
COCO ROCHA
Oh, that's cool.
ZAC POSEN
So she plays with the DJs. So she, she, you know, puts together 11 minutes of music.
COCO ROCHA
Well, I'm excited. So let's do it.
ZAC POSEN
(OVERLAPPING) Eleven minutes on the runway. I'm excited to watch you.
COCO ROCHA
I'm excited to walk.
ZAC POSEN
She has a great dress.
COCO ROCHA
Oh, I know.
ZAC POSEN
She's dressed at my friend, did the print for a girl and an artist named (UNINTELLIGIBLE). She's an exciting young female artist to watch.
COCO ROCHA
Oh, it's my favorite to walk in this, here in New York.
ZAC POSEN
Thank you very, very much.
COCO ROCHA
(OVERLAPPING) So...
ZAC POSEN
It's such a pleasure.
COCO ROCHA
...I know we have rehearsal so...
ZAC POSEN
(OVERLAPPING) Thank you.
COCO ROCHA
...see you later.
ZAC POSEN
Bye.
COCO ROCHA
Bye. I love you.
VERONICA WEBB
Time to check in with model Kalyn Hemphill to see what she's wearing today on Front Row Fashion.
KALYN HEMPHILL
Hey, Modelinia, this is Kalyn Hemphill, and you're watching Front Row Fashion. We're here at Macy's again, and I am with fashion expert Abbey Samet. And yesterday, you put me in this comfortable, edgy look. It was jeans and this really cool studded vest. So, I want to know what this more feminine look that you're talking about...
ABBEY SAMET
Yeah.
KALYN HEMPHILL
...for day four is gonna be?
ABBEY SAMET
So we're gonna dress you up for this next show. We feel like you're gonna have a lot of activities at night.
KALYN HEMPHILL
Mm hmm.
ABBEY SAMET
You're going out. We wanted you looking like sleek and sexy and feminine at the same time.
KALYN HEMPHILL
Of course.
ABBEY SAMET
So one top that I really love is this one.
KALYN HEMPHILL
Oh.
ABBEY SAMET
From Meghan. It's got his really pretty grosgrain ribbon and jewels like pearls and crystals, so I think that it will be really pretty. And of course, we need, um, a feminine skirt which I really like here. It's got a lot of draping. It's black, so it'll be very chic, and you can do a black polka dot stocking, which what we've got for you...
KALYN HEMPHILL
Polka dots?
ABBEY SAMET
...back in the fitting room. Yeah.
KALYN HEMPHILL
Oh, yes.
ABBEY SAMET
And then to complete the look, we have, um, this great leather bomber with a scooped-out neck.
KALYN HEMPHILL
Fantastic.
ABBEY SAMET
It's really feminine.
KALYN HEMPHILL
And that would go well with, like, anything.
ABBEY SAMET
Anything.
KALYN HEMPHILL
Not just this look.
ABBEY SAMET
Yeah.
KALYN HEMPHILL
I love it.
ABBEY SAMET
We can really use this. So I think we should try all these things on. I think you're gonna love it.
KALYN HEMPHILL
Okay.
ABBEY SAMET
Wow, Kalyn, this looks beautiful.
KALYN HEMPHILL
Thanks, Abbey.
ABBEY SAMET
Very chic. I love the soft pink color. It really flares your skin tone actually. So we have a couple things to talk about. Here we've got this awesome polka dot tights. They're making a comeback again from the '80s.
KALYN HEMPHILL
They're so fun.
ABBEY SAMET
And then back to this drape skirt, um, has a really, really pretty fall on you. It looks really pretty. And then we have this gorgeous jewelry encrusted top made up of like grosgrain ribbon that go across. Each bead is hand appliqued to the shirt. And then, to top it all off, I think this little shrunken bomber is really, really sexy. It's got the scooped-neck and the shoulder details. So Kalyn, what do you think of this look?
KALYN HEMPHILL
I think it's great. It's perfect for the front row of any fashion events. And, um, I don't know, I feel great in it. So Abbey, what do we have on top for tomorrow?
ABBEY SAMET
We've got stripes for you tomorrow. We've got a really cute look, so we're excited to show you.
KALYN HEMPHILL
That sounds great. You guys be sure to join us tomorrow for Front Row Fashion.
VERONICA WEBB
This is Modelinia Fashion Week TV and let's go to the runway highlights. Three runway shows in one week, who could do that? Well, I'll tell you, Lubov Azria, the creative director of the BCBG Max Azria Group. She took some time out of her incredibly intense schedule to talk to Coco Rocha about how she does it.
COCO ROCHA
Hey, Fashion Week TV, I am here with the legendary Lubov. How are you?
LUBOV AZRIA
I'm good.
COCO ROCHA
Good. You just finished one show today. You have two more to do.
LUBOV AZRIA
Yes.
COCO ROCHA
So we're not keeping you. (LAUGH) But I have, uh, a super big question. People who just have one, one show can't even think of inspiration sometimes. You have three.
COCO ROCHA
...sometimes, you have three. How do you think of three different inspirations?
LUBOV AZRIA
When we're doing the show, it's three different customers that we're designing for. So whenever I think of BCBG, I think of this woman who's very strong, confident, who's young, who wants to go out and have a good time, where with Herve Leger, it's a little bit more sophisticated. She's sexy, she's powerful. More labor goes into Hervé Leger...
COCO ROCHA
Mm hmm.
LUBOV AZRIA
...you know, more thought goes into it, I think, where BCBG is more carefree. And then, Max Azria, she's always an artist. She's always recreating herself, so really take reference from art. So what I do is I usually have, like, three inspiration boards. And when I work with each one of my teams, we sort of just focus on that customer at a time.
COCO ROCHA
Is it, all right, and we work on this line or is it just sporadically we just work all of them at the same time?
LUBOV AZRIA
At the same time.
COCO ROCHA
At the same time.
LUBOV AZRIA
Yeah.
COCO ROCHA
So good reviews on BCBG...
LUBOV AZRIA
Yeah.
COCO ROCHA
...amazing reviews. What do you think?
LUBOV AZRIA
Oh, I'm really honored. You have 10 minutes to show six months of work and it's so wonderful when everything sort of works, the clothes, the music, the models, the theme of it. When it's magic, it's magic. So I'm really thrilled that we hit the right note this time.
COCO ROCHA
What was the inspiration this season?
LUBOV AZRIA
Very simple. We were looking at all the lines we've done, and since it's our last show at Bryant Park, we kind of did a little retrospective. We looked back and we looked at our first show and how BCBG has all been, and what we decided to do is to really make a clean, cool collection, taking the colors that we've done, taking everything but really cleaning it up, making it very modern. This particular collection was remade like four times because we kept on getting very complicated. At the end, we just stripped everything and just decided we wanted something that we wanted to wear right away.
COCO ROCHA
Well, it did well. So, (LAUGH) let's just talk about your pieces here, the ones that you have, (STAMMERS) you know, I do believe, in BCBG, right?
LUBOV AZRIA
Yes.
COCO ROCHA
Is there a favorite child or were they all loved?
LUBOV AZRIA
I love intricate designs.
COCO ROCHA
Mm hmm.
LUBOV AZRIA
You know, I mean, I love this dress, a wraparound that you can wear in many ways, a geometric kind, really great. My favorite pieces are these underneath pieces. It's like second skin. Actually, model took all of them. We just decided it's not a big deal. We can remake them...
COCO ROCHA
Oh.
LUBOV AZRIA
...fast. And I wanted to keep them warm.
COCO ROCHA
Thank you for letting us hang out. I'll let you go back to what you do best. Thank you for watching Fashion Week TV. See you next time.
LUBOV AZRIA
Hi. My name is Lubov Azria and you're watching Modelinia Fashion Week TV.
VERONICA WEBB
Time to go backstage at the Rachel Roy show with Frederic Fekkai stylist Andre Rodman to show you how to get runway-ready hair at home.
ANDRE RODMAN
My name is Andre Rodman. I work at Frederic Fekkai Salon in Soho. We’re at Cedar Lake Studios for the Rachel Roy fashion show.
RACHEL ROY
First of all, I love Modelinia. I must say that. The collection is inspired from North Africa, so it's a bit of Cleopatra, very modern and chic.
ANDRE RODMAN
And clean, young. Sort of a futuristic Cleopatra.
RACHEL ROY
Hair and makeup is, for me, really important 'cause you can completely transform the way you're looking. Andre is working on something that's loose and kind of sexy. You need a balance, so that if you have a heavy makeup, you should have a really cool, effortless hairstyle or vice versa. That would be perfect...
ANDRE RODMAN
Okay.
RACHEL ROY
...if it could stay like this...
ANDRE RODMAN
Right.
RACHEL ROY
...without the product, which I know is so hard. (LAUGH) How are you gonna do that? I have no idea.
ANDRE RODMAN
In order to achieve this look, we're using strong hold mousse and hairspray. That's it. So that's how you got the look. Smooth the hair back using some mousse and you're gonna rough-dry and blow out the hair nice, smooth and straight, keeping all the front pieces very tight and smooth to the skull. Step two, blow hair very, very straight, keep the ends really clean, make sure the (UNINTELLIGIBLE) the hair. Step three, leaving out a top section of hair which you're gonna overlap onto the ponytail. Pull the side sections from one ear to the other back into a tight ponytail, then we're gonna rubber band these two pieces, leaving out two side sections like, almost let them like blow in the wind and just be, sort of free and natural.
ANDRE RODMAN (CONTINUED)
We're gonna clip up these pieces on the side just to keep everything from falling on the sides. The curling iron I use, because we blew out the hair really straight, but we want to keep sort of a slight movement on the ends of the hair, and also to give, like, a little lift to the sideburns on the sides. I'm not going for curl, just more of a, more natural-looking. And that's it. Hair and makeup go hand in hand and with the clothes. So, without that, you have nothing.
VERONICA WEBB
Some people have the kind of style that, you know, everybody admires. Elisa Sednaoui is a hot new model on the scene and Modelinia is taking you into her closet.
ELISA SEDNAOUI
Hi. This is Eliza Sednaoui. So here I am. That's me in Egypt, in my house. You're watching Modelinia. Fashion to me is a form of art. So now we're in my bedroom and I'm gonna show you some of my favorite outfits. First, let me show you my favorite leggings. Phi makes them. They made the whole collection like this, and then I also have these ones. And you can really wear them on the, every kind of dress, everything, and they save you, I mean, they work as pants. My favorite skirt of the season from Coven. It's a Brazilian brand, kind of rough, not too, not too nice either. Favorite piece of the season definitely was this jacket, which I'm gonna wear until the day I die.
ELISA SEDNAOUI (CONTINUED)
This season has been the leather season. Luckily, I don't put them all together. Otherwise, it's like, she has just arrived. I mean, if you see me like this, you think I just got off my Harley-Davidson and I've been riding all afternoon, yeah, easy rider. No, I haven't. I hate motorbikes. Don't try and charm me by taking me on a motorbike ride. It doesn't work. For casual wear, this is my favorite of all times, Elizabeth and James. (UNINTELLIGIBLE) morning, uh, dinner, lunch, sleep, uh, do whatever you want with it. It's amazing. Black jeans, (SOUNDS LIKE) April '77. The older they get, the better they get, with the, the best fit. This is vintage that I bought in a shop here in New York. This is hand-drawn on the silk.
ELISA SEDNAOUI (CONTINUED)
My favorite summer dress is this dress Alexander Wang. This is Thakoon the essence of black dress, elegant and simple and modern and, and cool and minimalist as I like it. It has to be minimal. Black, simple, less is more. Most of those are Christian Louboutin's. He's my godfather. This is one of my favorite pairs. They're called Deva. These are Fifres, that's the name of the shoe. And this is the new style. If you notice the heel, it's not straight. It's a particular kind of design that Christian has experimented this season in particular. These, for some reason, really made me think of Jessica Rabbit. They make your feet look like, it's like, these are my Betsey Johnson rain boots with little flowers. I think they're amazing.
ELISA SEDNAOUI (CONTINUED)
And I pulled out also sneakers so you don't think that I only wear heels. I have Converses, of course. How I define my style? I wouldn't define my style. I wear a lot of black, that's for sure, and I like leather, I like boots. I think that, how can I say it? Style, you have style or you don't have style, that's how it is. And it's like talent. And style, for me, is about what makes you feel good and comfortable. And there's no fashion. I don't care about fashion as long as something suits you. I love you, Modelinia. Thank you very much for spending the afternoon with me. Now you have to get out. (MAKES NOISE) Time to go. Bye. Bye. Thank you.
VERONICA WEBB
Modelinia Fashion Week TV is here with more highlights.
BEN PUNDOLE
Hey, Modelinia Fashion Week TV. I'm Ben Pundole. This is Good Units. Let me tell you a secret. Interview magazine's 40th anniversary party, we hosted it here. Interview commissioned some great street artists, Sky Farrell, Brian Ermanski, and Dax do this incredible artwork on the wall, which we're gonna leave up for as long as possible because it's amazing. No surprise. What an amazing crowd. Everybody from Terry Richardson and Kate Bosworth with Josh Lucas, Daphne Guinness and Naomi Campbell, uh, Mary Kate, Nate Lowman, you name it, they were here.
BEN PUNDOLE (CONTINUED)
Uh, since opening in 2000, the Hudson's had a history of throwing, uh, very elaborate parties, uh, flamboyant dinner parties, dance parties, uh, parties on the roof. So this is a great addition to what has become, uh, a real New York institution. We brought, uh, Rob McKinley in to help us with the design of Good Units. He designed GoldBar and, uh, Surf Lodge in Montauk. So, come and take a look at the powder room. We had some real fun with this room. Vintage, gym pictures of women in bicycles, why not? Well, this space was originally a gym built in the '20s, um, for the YWCA, which is what Hudson was built on, and we continue that gym being active units with, of course, old-fashioned gym bars.
BEN PUNDOLE (CONTINUED)
But we weren't sure what to call the space. One day, I noticed all these old air conditioning units and these graffiti that said Good Units and I thought, well, that's a perfect name. It can name what, whatever, whatever you want it to, really, and the name stuck. So Good Units it is. Modelinia Fashion Week TV, thanks for letting me show you around Good Units. Hope to see you soon.
VERONICA WEBB
Walking in high heels is an essential part of being a convincing runway model and making an entrance in everyday life. So, we caught up with modeling coach Anastassia Khozzisova to see how it's really done.
ANASTASSIA KHOZZISOVA
Hi, my name is Anastassia Khozzisova. I've been working on a catwalk since I was 16. There's nothing sexy than a woman in a pair of beautiful stilettos. Unfortunately, so many women doesn't know how to walk. I'm going to show you how the pros walk on runway. Here is the four tips I will teach you. The first is how to move with hips. Big mistake which most of the girls that they cross so much, so they sit down on the hips so the bone's coming out, don't go there. There is like a roundness. There is no, like, I don't go like that.
ANASTASSIA KHOZZISOVA (CONTINUED)
Stay straight, okay? Your hands like that, okay? And when you make a step, right, step. You're trying to touch with your, you don't move your hands. So, so you move your hips from that way to this way. You don't go like this. Just go like that, okay? And you don't move your shoulders. So your shoulders stay in the same position.
FEMALE
Mm hmm.
ANASTASSIA KHOZZISOVA
Okay? Keep your body from here to here, no moving. Your movement comes from here. They move just aside and you have to pull them. One, two. One, two. One, two. This is something for your energy. Put your arms like this, make them strong so they don't move. One, two. One, two. You touch with your hips. Tip number two is position of your hand. When I started, I was having this problem. Most of the time, when you walk on runway, you do like this. And you don't even realize that. Keep your head back and chin up. That's the most important thing. Step, step, move your body. Wait, oh, straight legs.
FEMALE
Thank you.
ANASTASSIA KHOZZISOVA
Straight legs.
FEMALE
I really don't get it.
ANASTASSIA KHOZZISOVA
Can we focus and concentrate here? This exercise will give you balance and confidence. Try to not go too fast. One, two, three, four. And try to, you know, as, as straight as much as possible. It's very good, first of all, for your muscles here. It's very good for your neck. Neck has to be relaxed all the time. Tip number three, practice walking on your toes. You do like this, you stretch, you curl, and you step. But you don't step on your heels, like, you don't go there. That's why you have to stretch your arch. You go one line. This is what you do to walk on toes.
ANASTASSIA KHOZZISOVA (CONTINUED)
This is how you train your muscles. And one, two, three, four, five, six. Don't move your back. You're moving your back, that's why you're losing the balance. When you move your back, you're losing your balance. You put your arms right here and you push your shoulders down, up on your toe and down. That's very good for balance and that's one of the exercise which also works all your muscles on your legs. Tip number four, the movement of your arms. The movement of your arms goes from here, it's like a watch. If you see that, this is like this. One, two. One, two. One, you're pushing too much back your, or your, you're pushing back your butt. Don't push it back. That's why you're going like this. You got to walk too.
NASTASSIA KHOZZISOVA (CONTINUED)
So what you need to do, it's a good exercise. You could try it with a walk or you can move just like this, one, two, three, four. One, two, three, four. That's basically relaxing that muscle of your shoulders. Plus, when you already (UNINTELLIGIBLE) when you do position, this is how you will do pose. This is for your picture. Two, three, four, five, six. One, two, three, four, straight legs, two, one, two, one, two. Not bad. In fact, you can apply much of this to your real life. These four tips is the basic parts of the walk. Hips, hand, toes, arms. These are the tips so you can walk like a supermodel. Let's go.
