CHANEL IMAN
Hey.
ELISA SEDNAOUI
I love it. I love it. I love it.
VERONICA WEBB
Hi. It's Veronica Webb and you're watching Modelinia Fashion Week TV. It's day six of Fashion Week. It's almost over, went by like that. I mean, I can't believe it. I hope you had fun with us. Well, right now, we're at MAC and Milk Studios, and it's in the Meatpacking District and it's the epicenter of creativity for the fashion world. Lots of designers present here besides Bryant Park. So today on the show, we have Coco Rocha talking to legendary Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto about his popular Y-3 line. Ooh, and we also have an exclusive interview with fashion veteran Vivienne Tam. And we're gonna get to see what it was like backstage at the Marc Jacobs show.
VERONICA WEBB (CONTINUED)
Also, as you've come to expect, we're gonna check out all the highlights from the latest runway shows, faces of fashion, and a whole lot more. But now, it's time to check in with Modelinia's expert blogger Bianca Posterli. Bianca, what's up today?
BIANCA POSTERLI
Thank you, Veronica. Now, Modelinia fans, if you've been watching, which we hope you have, you've met Crystal Renn, who's one of our fabulous DIY girls. We ran into her yesterday at the Jason Wu for TSE presentation and she's gonna talk about how much she's having blogging for Glamour and being a fashion writer. Model-turned-DJ is a huge trend right now and the latest girl to become part of the craze is Hannah Holman. She deejayed at a party yesterday at the W Lounge and shared her playlist, which included tunes from Michael Jackson. This morning, we ran into Chanel Iman prepping to walk in Michael Kors show and she was gushing about a special present that Michael brought her.
CHANEL IMAN
He brought me a movie today, Diana Ross...
BIANCA POSTERLI
Oh, cool.
CHANEL IMAN
...Mahogany. So I'll be watching this tonight, eating popcorn.
BIANCA POSTERLI
Have you, have you seen it before?
CHANEL IMAN
Thank you, Michael.
BIANCA POSTERLI
Fashion editors headed uptown to catch Oscar de la Renta's show where one of Modelinia's favorites, Arlenis Sosa, was walking. Now, she's from the Dominican Republic just like the designer. That's all for today, but there's still one more day left of Fashion Week, so we're back tomorrow with more model news.
VERONICA WEBB
Thank you, Bianca. I always love hearing from you. So now, Coco Rocha is going to take us to hang out with Yohji Yamamoto backstage with his Y-3 line.
[FW.TV_EP.05]00:02:53 COCO ROCHA
Hey, Modelinia. We are at the back entrance to Y-3, just about to go in to have our interview with Yohji, Yohji Yamamoto. Super excited about that. As you all know, he's one of those designers that uses structure and sculptures. And as you may know, all of my outfits are all about being sculpted. So I'm excited to see what he's got going on in there. I heard a little rumor about we've got laser lights going on on the runway. (UNINTELLIGIBLE) I just hit somebody in the face. Let's go in. Let's check it out. I'm here with Yohji. How are you?
YOHJI YAMAMOTO
How are you?
COCO ROCHA
I'm very good. Congratulations. Look at this. Everyone just wants to see you right now.
YOHJI YAMAMOTO
Yeah. Yeah.
COCO ROCHA
Today was about athletic wear. We know you're all about structure and everything has, like, a form, and then, yet, for Y-3, it needs to be a little more wearable and (WORD?).
YOHJI YAMAMOTO
Yeah.
COCO ROCHA
So how do you do it? How do you say, well, today, this is the new Y-3 look, and this is what it is this season but yet different?
YOHJI YAMAMOTO
Oh, yeah. The goal of this brand...
COCO ROCHA
Mm hmm.
YOHJI YAMAMOTO
...is not simply for sporting, for jogging.
COCO ROCHA
Mm hmm.
YOHJI YAMAMOTO
This was born from a sporting spirit...
COCO ROCHA
Yeah.
YOHJI YAMAMOTO
...that must be street, elegant fashion.
COCO ROCHA
Mm hmm. And, uh, how did you pick the shoes? I think that's gonna be a big hit.
YOHJI YAMAMOTO
Shoes...
COCO ROCHA
The colors...
YOHJI YAMAMOTO
...I know always extremes.
COCO ROCHA
Yep.
YOHJI YAMAMOTO
One extreme is simply black and white. Very classic, elegant.
COCO ROCHA
Yeah.
YOHJI YAMAMOTO
The other, like robot. Crazy, kind of bad taste (WORD?).
COCO ROCHA
I like that. One question I'm asking all designers is when did you fall in love with fashion?
YOHJI YAMAMOTO
I was sent by school to, to Paris. I was (WORD?) by Paris.
COCO ROCHA
Ooh, that's probably very true and fashion is in Paris, so why wouldn’t it happen there? So, thank you so much.
YOHJI YAMAMOTO
Thank you.
COCO ROCHA
Have a great night and great success.
YOHJI YAMAMOTO
Thank you. Thank you very much.
COCO ROCHA
Bye. It was amazing show. We're wrapping it up here. You can even hear them. They’re bringing down the house, so let's get out of here before we're in here for life.
VERONICA WEBB
It's time for Front Row Fashion with Models Of The Runway star Kalyn Hemphill.
KALYN HEMPHILL
Hey, Modelinia. I'm Kalyn Hemphill and you're watching Front Row Fashion. I'm here at Macy's again for the fifth day to pick another outfit. I'm here with Abbey Samet and she is going to be showing me another fabulous look. Yesterday, I was in a cute pearl gorgeous top and a drape skirt that I absolutely love. I'm excited to see what you pull up for me today.
ABBEY SAMET
Well, (UNINTELLIGIBLE) we would do some stripes. Stripes are a big trend for spring and I think we can work it into a look to wear now even though it's cold outside. Um, and I also love the color red, so I have...
KALYN HEMPHILL
Ooh, let's go.
ABBEY SAMET
...a great skirt over here that I want to show you. This is like a great miniskirt. It's a little high waisted. It's got a cute pocket detail...
KALYN HEMPHILL
Okay.
ABBEY SAMET
...and a little tiny pleat. I got these fun, flirty, little ruffled sleeves.
KALYN HEMPHILL
Mm. Yeah.
ABBEY SAMET
So I think we should try this on for sure.
KALYN HEMPHILL
Okay.
ABBEY SAMET
And then we have a jacket right here that will complete the look. This is from Rachel, Rachel Roy, and it's got little knitsy (SP?) detail and the military buttons. So I think...
KALYN HEMPHILL
Right.
ABBEY SAMET
...this will be great.
KALYN HEMPHILL
Yeah, let's go try it on.
ABBEY SAMET
You want to try it on?
KALYN HEMPHILL
Yeah.
ABBEY SAMET
Great.
KALYN HEMPHILL
Hey.
ABBEY SAMET
That looks great. The stripes look amazing on you and so does the color red. This is a perfect look. We have a couple of different trends going on here today. We, we have this great military-inspired jacket and it has this really cool knit detail on the sleeve. Um, you can push it up or kind of pull it down and kind of play with it. This French Connection high-waisted skirt in, in this great poppy red. And then we've got this stripe T-shirt and these gorgeous, little ruffly, fun sleeves. And then we've got, back to this great studded shoe with the tiny straps. And, of course, you need the, the platform to keep you going. This is the look we pick for you for day five and we hope you love it.
KALYN HEMPHILL
I really, really love this outfit. Now, tell us what we have on top for tomorrow.
ABBEY SAMET
Well, Kalyn, we've got a great harem pant that we've pulled and we're gonna style it beautifully with a lace top. We really think you're gonna love this outfit. It's really different from everything else we've pulled this week.
KALYN HEMPHILL
I can't wait to put it on.
ABBEY SAMET
Good.
KALYN HEMPHILL
We'll see you tomorrow on Front Row Fashion.
VER0NICA WEBB
I like this part. It's time to check out the latest runway highlights.
[B-ROLL]
VERONICA WEBB
In 1994, I was in Vivienne Tam's first runway show. And ever since then, her East meets West inspirations have set the world on fire. I'm gonna talk to Vivienne about her inspiration. Hey, hi, Vivienne.
VIVIENNE TAM
How are you? I'm very excited to see you.
VER0NICA WEBB
I'm excited to see you.
VIVIENNE TAM
My most exciting moment now. Yeah.
VERONICA WEBB
That's so nice.
VIVIENNE TAM
Yeah, yeah, it is.
VERONICA WEBB
So, (STAMMERS) let's talk about...
VIVIENNE TAM
Yeah.
VERONICA WEBB
(STAMMERS) Let's, let's talk about your collection.
VIVIENNE TAM
My collection this time is inspired by the movie Avatar, about going green, about the animals and the military. I want to celebrate the animals because the animals are disappearing in the world. This time I do 12 Chinese zodiac animals.
VERONICA WEBB
Oh, you did all the Chinese zodiac, I understand, because...
VIVIENNE TAM
Yes, because...
VERONICA WEBB
Happy Chinese New Year.
VIVIENNE TAM
Thank you. Year Of The Tiger. There's a lot of textures. You know, I talk about...
VERONICA WEBB
Military, animals, texture.
VIVIENNE TAM
The colors are more neutral colors and natural colors, and the accents are red. Also, origami dresses, and it's very meditative because, you know, the way you fold it is so geometrical. And it's very scientific, too. It's really amazing. So I say, why not? I'm using those shapes and forms to create justice for me.
VERONICA WEBB
A lot of intricate pleating and folding.
VIVIENNE TAM
Yeah, exactly. It's very abstract at the same time.
VERONICA WEBB
It really is a good look. Thank you so much.
VIVIENNE TAM
(SPEAKS FOREIGN LANGUAGE)
VERONICA WEBB
All right. Well, let's what's going on backstage at Marc Jacobs. Coco Rocha has the exclusive backstage pass for Modelinia.
COCO ROCHA
Hey, Coco Rocha here. You are watching Modelinia Fashion Week TV. We are backstage at Marc Jacobs, quite exclusive. So let's see who we can find. No access. No access. We don't know what's going on in these, so explain.
HANNAH HOLMAN
We're in this box and you're gonna come tear down this paper that's in the box. We're gonna be standing there like soldiers. It's very cool.
FRANCOIS NARS
And all the colors of the show are all beige and neutral. Basically, the makeup is the only thing of color that you'll see in the, in the runway.
COCO ROCHA
We're about to talk to Guido. He cuts my hair.
GUIDO
The lob, sort of styling would be done with Marc. It's not meant to be grungy or undone even though it is. It's still got to look like there's a thought about you.
COCO ROCHA
What product are we using at Marc Jacobs?
WILLIAM MURPHY
Well, we're using lots of Nars products at Marc Jacobs. To get a (WORD?) face, a lavender eye and copious amounts of mascara, seven times more mascara than you have on.
MICHAEL GWALTNEY
You know, it’s kind of that, um, bad girl went out last night, she's running late, she throws on something.
COCO ROCHA
Kind of like my life.
WILLIAM MURPHY
I think that's, it is your life.
COCO ROCHA
The hell is this. I'm done. I am done. I've tried to get out of here. They thought I was one of the models and pulled me for first look. So, let's leave before we get into some trouble, okay? See you later Modelinia Fashion Week. Until next time.
VERONICA WEBB
Hanne Gaby Odiele is one of New York hottest models. Her story is about style, it's about success, but most of all, inspiration.
HANNE GABY ODIELE
Hello, I'm Hanne. I'm 20 years old, and I'm from Belgium. And this is my apartment in New York City. I got discovered on a music festival three years ago, and then I got signed in Belgium, and then they showed the pictures to New York and when we created, I was in New York for fashion week. This is my first time in New York by myself. Yeah. And my very first show was Marc By Marc. In the beginning, it was like a learning process to know the people. And I didn't really know what was going on, but the more I did it, the more I liked it. But now, it's like walking down the street.
HANNE GABY ODIELE (CONTINUED)
I like Kate Moss. I think she's one of the best models ever. She has everything, I think, like rock and roll, cool. She has style. She's beautiful. Last season, I love Givenchy. I love to do it also like it's, it's a good show like always good feeling. With the other shows like Prada, I love to do. Balenciaga is always one of the favorites. It's, like, really early but there's a nice breakfast backstage and everyone is excited. And, then you walk down and then you feel like a trouper. Two years ago, I got, uh, hit by a car on the street. I was in the hospital in New York for two months, and then I had a long recovery in Belgium.
HANNE GABY ODIELE (CONTINUED)
I had to learn to walk again 'cause, uh, I broke my shoulders and my knee. That was pretty hard Then I came back and tried harder even. It changed my life. Yeah. I like my job. I love this jacket. This is Dries Van Noten. I bought it in Belgium, and some T-shirt I found in, like, some store in New York somewhere, and then Sportmax brands. It's my dad's hat from, I don't know, on the 80's. I have no idea. Yeah, I like, uh, photo shoots. A lot of my personality comes out in my pictures. I just, like, this stuff and people just make picture of it.
LISA CANT
Hello, I'm Lisa Cant. Come on in. This is where I hang out and relax and watch TV and just chill. And this is my kitchen. It's very, it's very nice and sleek and modern. I don’t cook, like, I make like really simple, easy things, you know what I mean? Like, spaghetti, and it's great for those few occasions that I do cook. This is my dining room table that I use as desk. Uh, I have my computer. I have some candles here, all my books and many, many papers that I don't really need anymore but they're still lying around. So today, I am registering for school for the next semester. Uh, I picked my classes. I've chosen, like, Geology 1, like, in Earth Science, which is actually what my parents do.
LISA CANT (CONTINUED)
My family is very academic. I mean, my parents both have their PhDs and I have one sister who's getting her PhD now in anthropology. So, they're obviously very proud that I'm going back to school, so hopefully, I get an A. And then I'm taking a music class, uh, masterpieces of western music and calculus. I think I'm gonna start (UNINTELLIGIBLE). I do not really know what I'm gonna do with my career yet. Um, I think it's quite early and I'll figure out the job later. So, I chose Columbia because of its location in New York, obviously, 'cause I live here and work here. And, I mean, I love the campus. It's so beautiful up there.
LISA CANT (CONTINUED)
I mean, at first, you know, I would be sitting in class and kind of be, like, looking at my watch, thinking, okay, what am I gonna be doing tomorrow, think about things for tomorrow when you kind of need to focus on school, whereas, when you're modeling, you know, your mind can kind of drift here and there and you could think about different things. But I've kind of gotten more into the more habit of focusing on what I'm doing. And I have class up there kind of soon. And that's it. I come up here, it's very beautiful and it's a great place to be. And now, I'm off to class.
VERONICA WEBB
You ready? We're about to give you a peek at today's runway highlights.
COCO ROCHA
Hey, Coco Rocha here with the lovely Michael Kors, and you are watching Fashion Week TV. How are you?
MICHAEL KORS
I'm wonderful.
COCO ROCHA
Good. Everyone wants your attention.
MICHAEL KORS
Oh, you know, it's different than when I first started. We had one crew back then. Things have changed.
CHANEL IMAN
I love being at Michael Kors because Michael is so amazing. He's a great friend, and I love him, like, he's a comedian, and I always look forward to doing his show.
COCO ROCHA
You've done so many collections. How do you make it new? How do you make it fresh?
MICHAEL KORS
For me, it's kind of, how do you take the pieces that people live in and find new ways to tweak them? What's the new silhouette in a trouser? What's the new coat you need to own? This is all about looking easy and relaxed. I wanted it to be sexy but not uptight 'cause comfortable is a key thing. I just think people want to feel great when they get dressed. So, I wanted to be languid and sexy. A little 70s, a little Patti Hansen, a little Lauren Hutton, those girls always look kind of just undone and modern. My mom got remarried when I was five, and I went to her bridal gown fitting and I kind of redid the dress. And she listened to me.
COCO ROCHA
Okay.
MICHAEL KORS
So, which is crazy, um, but I think we made some good decisions.
VERONICA WEBB
The Cellar Bar at the Bryant Park Hotel is one of the hottest hotspots during Fashion Week. Let's go.
KELLY CHOI
Hey, Modelinia Fashion Week TV. I'm Kelly Choi and it's Fashion Week in New York. Now, amidst all the gorgeous shows and late night parties, sometimes, you got to take a step back away from it all and take a breather. Well, just across from the tents is the Cellar Bar at the Bryant Park Hotel and this is the perfect spot to relax and have a delicious cocktail. And this is Isaac Elbhar. He is the general manager at the Cellar Bar. This place is hot, right?
ISAAC ELBHAR
It is, absolutely.
KELLY CHOI
But the fact that it's just across from the tents where the fashion that's all taking place, you must see some amazing, gorgeous people, lots of celebrities.
ISAAC ELBHAR
We do actually see lots of celebrities 'cause (STAMMERS) we are across the street from, uh, from the tents so we do have a lot of celebrities and models doing Fashion Week, so these people would like to, need to relax after, you know, after so much tension all the time that they need relax.
KELLY CHOI
Well, definitely, it's a bar, first and foremost, so you can get a fantastic cocktail.
ISAAC ELBHAR
Exactly.
KELLY CHOI
So Isaac, these are our three beautiful cocktails. Tell me again what they are, the names of them.
ISAAC ELBHAR
So the name of this one would be (UNINTELLIGIBLE).
KELLY CHOI
Mm hmm.
ISAAC ELBHAR
Uh, that one is the funky dream and this is the Asian extravaganza.
KELLY CHOI
Definitely beautiful cocktails, very Fashion Week-oriented.
ISAAC ELBHAR
Thank you very much (UNINTELLIGIBLE).
KELLY CHOI
And sure to attract the most beautiful Fashion Week crowd from just over there at the tents. Cheers, santé.
ISAAC ELBHAR
Cheers (WORD?).
KELLY CHOI
To you.
ISAAC ELBHAR
And to you, sante.
KELLY CHOI
Cheers.
ISAAC ELBHAR
Thank you.
VERONICA WEBB
People ask me all the time, how do fashion models stay in shape? They ask me how I stay in shape. And you know what I do? It's this Afro-Brazilian workout, it's so much fun, it's called Capoeira. Check it out. What's up, Modelinia? I'm Veronica Webb and this is Brett Hoebel, the genius trainer. Brent had this thing, it was called booty Brazil, right? And I didn’t know what I was in for. So Brett, describe your program for me.
BRETT HOEBEL
I get this question all the time by a lot of, especially models is they want to work on the certain parts of their body. The booty is probably the number one. So the best one training that I've got for that is Capoeira. So I'm psyched to show people out there at Modelinia some of the exercise we do every day to get your booty in the shape that it is.
VERONICA WEBB
Look what you get for it. Careful, daddy. (LAUGH) All right. Let's do it.
BRETT HOEBEL
Balance (WORD?) means to sway.
VERONICA WEBB
I've started working with Brett twice a week. I thought I was gonna die. Then once I realized I wasn't gonna die, then I started working with Brett three times a week. Then I realized I loved it. Then I started working with Brett four times a week because I realized I couldn’t live without it.
BRETT HOEBEL
In (WORD?) Brazil was Capoeira in yoga then you came in the body Brazil which is body conditioning in Capoeira. And now, you're starting to really transition into martial art. And now some of you guys, you'll see this. This looks like certain yoga or traditional fitness moves. After the center (WORD?), stick out your booty, baby. We're constantly moving. Role, get up high on that au. This is the most fundamental move in Capoeira and it's like break dancing, a little top rocking. This is mixing up. She loves to do this. Make it sexy, open that ginga up. Uh-oh. How are you feeling? I can't hear you. A little breathing.
VERONICA WEBB
I feel good. I feel good.
BRETT HOEBEL
Ah.
VERONICA WEBB
I feel good.
BRETT HOEBEL
What I love about Capoeira, number one, it's fun. Number two, you can do it anywhere. You don’t need equipment. And you get all four of those, cardio, core, strength and stretch all in one. One of her friends said to me was, I asked Veronica if she got butt implants. I was like, yes, I did my job.
VERONICA WEBB
Having a big, physical vocabulary of dance moves, of yoga moves, of Capoeira moves, that's important for models too because it's our job to make clothes look new. And also, you know, being fit makes fashion really fun 'cause it's easy to wear clothes when you're in great shape.
BRETT HOEBEL
(WORD?) Uh-huh.
VERONICA WEBB
That's right. That's the whole story.
BRETT HOEBEL
There it is.
VERONICA WEBB
Some of my very first bookings in Paris were with this girl Yasmine Le Bon and she has become a fashion icon, a mom. She's married to a rock star. And now, she sits down with Modelinia and talks about her new line for Wallis.
YASMIN LE BON
Hi, I'm Yasmin Le Bon. (LAUGH) I was born in Oxford, in the city of Oxford in England. Couldn’t think of anything else better to do. (LAUGH) Wrong answer. I've come from a really arts and music family and love fashion and spend all my money on fashion magazines. It's actually my friends who started getting twitchy on my behalf, you know? You haven't got a job lined up. You haven't got further education. They sort of freak me out enough to actually think, oh, Christ, I'm gonna go do something. So I took myself up to London, walked in to Models 1, the rest is history. I mean, a week later, I was working (UNINTELLIGIBLE)
YASMIN LE BON (CONTINUED)
I actually think my first job ever, and I'll think of, of a way of rephrasing this because I did manage to say this on live TV, my first job was a hand job. And then I quickly backtracked but nobody was a unipart calendar for, for tools. I mean, I was literally holding spanners. No, I didn't really have a big break. For better or for worse, I was doing all sorts, the good, the bad and the ugly. My first jobs were not Italian Vogue or big campaigns. By the time I got those things, I really, really appreciated them. Uh, this sort of came out of I think some drunken evening actually. Philip and I both had one too many and we sat down and, and thought that if they want to do something different and new, then I was interested.
YASMIN LE BON (CONTINUED)
And it's been really challenging. It's been a huge learning curve for me. Jewelry happened as well. I mean, I'm hoping we could actually do a few more things. I'm hoping the jewelry is gonna carry on 'cause that was a lot of fun. So I just want to do something that’s good, quality, that's classic, timeless. You'll feel good in. I'm just designing the clothes I want for next season with the accessories. (LAUGH) Hi. I'm Yasmin Le Bon and this is Modelinia.
VERONICA WEBB
I'm so glad you came again today to hang out with us. I'll be back tomorrow for the last day of exclusive coverage of Fashion Week. I'm Veronica Webb and this is Modelinia Fashion Week TV.
