VERONICA WEBB
Hi, I'm Veronica Webb, and this is Modelinia Fashion Week TV. Well, this is it. It’s the very last moments here at Bryant Park and we're soaking it all in. We've got a great show coming up for you tonight. Coco Rocha got to see the William Rast show and also get up close and personal with designer Justin Timberlake. We also have an exclusive pre-show interview with designer Isaac Mizrahi moments before his show hit the runway. I have a great interview for you with Ferin Mallis, the woman behind Fashion Week here at Bryant Park. Then we'll also look at emerging beauty trends, fashion trends, front row fashion and a whole lot more. But first, you know what time it is. We got to go catch up with Bianca Posterli, Modelinia's expert blogger.
BIANCA POSTERLI
Thanks, Veronica. Now, as we told you early in the week, Irina Lazareanu wouldn't be walking in any shows, instead she'll be sitting front row for a few specific designers. And yesterday she finally showed up for a whole day of fashion fun from Phillip Lim, who's her good friend, to Jeremy Scott and then finally, Anna Sui. Modelinia hosted a party last night at Tanuki Tavern for our cover girl Kemp Muhl. And she talks about just how it feels to be on the cover of our very first issue of Modelinia (UNINTELLIGIBLE).
KEMP MUHL
Dork. Dork. I think dork, that's the first thing that comes to mind. I think a glossy, glossy dork.
BIANCA POSTERLI
We stopped into the Marchesa presentation and ran into Brooklyn Decker. Now, even though she was wearing one of their black and white designs, she was obsessing over their red dresses. After a quick outfit change, Brooklyn stopped into Modelinia's party at Tanuki Tavern, and she was wearing a really awesome outfit, full of sparkles which are definitely a trend again, and a very interesting accessory.
BROOKLYN DECKER
I usually wear them when, um, the make-up's not working or I need to cover up puffiness so that's why I have them on tonight.
BIANCA POSTERLI
Last night, Anna Sui had an all-star cast from supermodel Karen Elson who opened and closed the show, to Agyness Deyn, Sasha P., Natasha Poly, it was huge. Now, sadly, this is the last time that we're gonna be here at Bryant Park for fashion week, as next season, it's moving up town to Lincoln Center, but there are still London, Milan and Paris to report on. So, I'll be bring you all of the model news on the blog. This has been Bianca Posterli for Modelinia Fashion Week TV.
VERONICA WEBB
Thank you, Bianca. All right. So now, Coco Rocha is gonna hang out with Justin Timberlake, right? And I guess somehow they're gonna bring sexy back, I don't know. But they're gonna talk about his fashion line, William Rast.
COCO ROCHA
Hey, Coco Rocha here. You are watching fashion week TV, and I am with Justin and Trace. How are you guys?
JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE
Good.
COCO ROCHA
Good.
TRACE AYALA
We're good.
COCO ROCHA
First question, we want to know, it is a new design, right? So, how did you two decide this is what we're gonna do, um, we're gonna call it (STAMMERS) William Rast.
TRACE AYALA
Uh, it's something that we’ve always talked about. Drawing up, we always talk about having a fashion line and, at least being involved in fashion somehow. And it was natural progression for, for both us, right timing.
JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE
We finally came up with a name and we just decided to roll with it, so, (LAUGH) this is where we are. (LAUGH)
COCO ROCHA
And this season a lot of people have different inspirations. I've noticed furniture has been the biggest inspiration for people this season.
TRACE AYALA
Really? Interesting. Ours was landscape.
COCO ROCHA
Landscape.
TRACE AYALA
Yeah.
JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE
Yeah.
TRACE AYALA
Landscape in the Midwest.
JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE
A year ago, we debut a collection at Bryant Park. The effort was to really push our DNA in our core which is denim meets leather, biker culture meets Americana. Now that we've established that, what we wanted to push for this fall is something a little deeper which is sort of, I got this idea, okay, if we have this biker and kind of turn them into more of a nomad rather than just a rebel that they actually have a cause or that they actually have something that they're searching for. It just opened up this whole idea of discovery. We couldn't get away from the Midwest landscape, which is desert, dirt roads, turns into national forest, turns into a snow cap, peaks and mountains. And that was really what our main inspiration was.
COCO ROCHA
You had fringes, right? You had something like (UNINTELLIGIBLE).
JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE
We did. We did.
TRACE AYALA
Yes, we did. We did have a lot of fringes
COCO ROCHA
There's a little bit of self style going to this, or is it pretty much contrary?
TRACE AYALA
Oh, of course. I mean, you can't help it.
JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE
Sure.
TRACE AYALA
Yeah.
JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE
Absolutely. It's interesting you would think because we are two males that the men's collection would be easy, but it’s actually really challenging.
TRACE AYALA
Yeah.
JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE
You feel like you're handcuffed a little more. Men just want to wear what they want to wear every year. You know, they have their staples. More than women, I think women are obviously more adventurous with their clothing. You can be a little more creative with the women. With the men, it’s like, okay, you start with an idea and you're like, uh, we can't stray from what's really gonna work, and so...
COCO ROCHA
Oh, I know you guys do good 'cause I remember a year ago and it was, well, (UNINTELLIGIBLE) remember.
JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE
Oh, thank you.
TRACE AYALA
Thank you.
COCO ROCHA
So, we just had our amazing interview with Trace and Justine. It is freezing out here, so we’re gonna get back in there and watch the William Rast show. I'm Coco Rocha. See you soon.
VERONICA WEBB
All right. Let's go hang out with Isaac Mizrahi. He's a good friend of mine. He's a four-time CFDA winner. And he's amazingly talented. He's had a long career, and Modelinia is gonna walk you through it. So I'm here with my great pal, Isaac Mizrahi. It's a couple of days before Isaac Spring 2010 show.
ISAAC MIZRAHI
Right.
VERONICA WEBB
And of course...
ISAAC MIZRAHI
Well, it's my fall 2010 show.
VERONICA WEBB
Oh, it's fall 2010.
ISAAC MIZRAHI
It’s fall, darling, fall.
VERONICA WEBB
So, Isaac is one of the most interesting histories in American fashion.
ISAAC MIZRAHI
I do.
VERONICA WEBB
You do. He went to Parsons, then he worked at Calvin Klein. Then you went out on your own. You did a fantastic debut in 1988, was it?
ISAAC MIZRAHI
1988.
VERONICA WEBB
Yeah, 1988.
ISAAC MIZRAHI
I worked with Perry Ellis, Veronica.
VERONICA WEBB
I forgot Perry Ellis.
ISAAC MIZRAHI
He was sort of, like, my spiritual father.
VERONICA WEBB
So the first thing Isaac did was he gave me this huge...
ISAAC MIZRAHI
Hug.
VERONICA WEBB
...you know? And from, you know, we've always been friends, but that's what your clothes are like. Your clothes are about feeling good and feeling great.
ISAAC MIZRAHI
Wow, thank you. I agree, yes. That's why I like color so much. I like color because it immediately, look, guys, okay, change. It's kind of like, you know, I decided at some point recently that I needed to make clothes that I couldn't stop myself from making. You know what I mean? 'Cause otherwise I get bored, you know? And, and then the customer gets bored. And then it's boring. It's kind of like idea of like, you know, camping. You know, camping trip, field and stream meets you know, meets couture. It's like the idea of like fairies and witches in Central Park. It's like Rigaudon. It's like the fashion version of Rigaudon in (STAMMERS) set in Central Park. You know what I mean?
VERONICA WEBB
Got it. It's time for Front Row Fashion with models of the runway star, Kalyn Hemphill.
KALYN HEMPHILL
Hey, Modelinia, you're watching Front Row Fashion. And I'm Kalyn Hemphill. We're here at Macy's for our final day of style tops with expert Abbey Samet. So, yesterday, she put me in stripes, a fabulous little red mini. And today, I'm really excited to see what you're gonna pull out of the bag for this final look.
ABBEY SAMET
Well, Kalyn I have a lot of great ideas. And I think one of them will be to, like, mix it up, change it from where we’ve been. We have a couple of great pieces. One of the trends for spring is yellow and, um, and mixed with blaze. So, we've got this gorgeous blouse from Rachel, Rachel Roy. And I actually love this jacket. It's got short sleeves. It's a, got a little bit padding, quilted detail. So, I think these will work really nicely together. Here, we've got the pant.
KALYN HEMPHILL
Oh, it looks great.
ABBEY SAMET
I think you're really gonna like this. It's got the gold button detail. And then I picture it with an open-toe bootie. So, that would really complete the look.
KALYN HEMPHILL
Great (WORD?).
ABBEY SAMET
We have three great pieces.
KALYN HEMPHILL
(OVERLAPPING) I'm excited to toss this on.
ABBEY SAMET
Great. Well, let's go try it out. Follow me.
KALYN HEMPHILL
Okay.
ABBEY SAMET
Wow, Kalyn, that looks amazing on you.
KALYN HEMPHILL
Thanks. I really like it.
ABBEY SAMET
Great. I, I think you said it might have been one of your favorite looks.
KALYN HEMPHILL
For sure. For sure. I really like the harem pants.
ABBEY SAMET
Yeah. We think it's a great trend. We're really going after it. It's got this soft little tie. You did it just perfectly. Yellow is a really important color for spring, so we've got this cami with the lace, but just the hint of the yellow. And then back to this little short sleeve blazer which has got this quilting and padding detail. And then it's got this fun little zips which we think make it look a little more updated. And then to top the look off, we put this open-toe python booties, with a fold over top and the little tassels. We think you look really posh and fabulous, and we've really enjoyed styling you this week.
KALYN HEMPHILL
I want to say thank you very much to our fabulous style expert Abbey Samet. My name is Kalyn Hemphill and thanks for watching Front Row Fashion.
VERONICA WEBB
Let's check out the latest runway highlights. Every season, there's always a few trends that make the difference that give you the look. We checked in with a few style experts to see what they are this year.
SUZE YALOF SCHWARTZ
Hi, I'm Suze Yalof Schwartz from Glamour magazine, and I have been backstage for the last seven days covering the back of the show and the front of the show. And I have to tell you, the no-makeup makeup look is over. So the strong lips that we've been seeing backstage at Donna Karan, Tory Burch, Luca Luca, Herve Leger, and pretty much almost every show that you're gonna go to, this is a matte, strong, from bright red, bright orange to the deeper darker purples.
CHARLOTTE TILBURY
They're lots of like taupes and nudes and chocolates in the collection. So we reflect on those colors in the makeup.
SUZE YALOF SCHWARTZ
For the eye, dark, and we're talking from the lid all the way to the brow bone. Diane Von Furstenberg, DKNY, Thakoon. I even saw it just five seconds ago at the Oscar Dela Renta show. Do not shy away from color. You're gonna be seeing that everywhere. Now let's talk hair. My personal favorite is the big curly hair. We saw it at Ports. Tracy Reese had these really tight curls. It was big up top and very slender at the bottom so that they can wrap the scarf around and that it won't interfere with the clothes. I also love Jason Wu, Odile Gilbert. She's one of my favorite hairdressers.
SUZE YALOF SCHWARTZ (CONTINUED)
The inspiration with The Piano that was flat, middle part, and then in the back she made a pony tail and then she wrapped it around and put little, tiny rubber bands around each piece. At Lela Rose, Ted Gibson decided to do something that was very full up top and then pulled out hairs so it would get the flyaways as you walk down the runway, and I just thought it was so chic. If you're like most people, you probably don’t have time for any of these hairstyles so you're gonna put your hair in a ponytail. The look at (UNINTELLIGIBLE) was the side ponytail, and a lot of people feel that that looks very young and fresh and chic.
SUZE YALOF SCHWARTZ (CONTINUED)
Yigal Azrouel was, we didn’t know. Is it a ponytail or is it an updo? It was a half pony which means when you go to pull it through at the rubber band the second time, stop right before you make it through and then you've got the look. For nails, if you have to make one decision because there is a lot of color out there, you should really think greige. It's a cross between beige and grey, and we're seeing it everywhere. In fact at Marc Jacobs, they had to match perfectly to the clothes. Usually they say, don’t match your nails to your clothes, but now it's a new thing. These are some of the important beauty trends that I have seen at this Fashion Week. I'm Suze Yalof Schwartz and you're watching Modelinia Fashion Week TV.
VERONICA WEBB
I mean, you can't do anything anymore unless you have a mobile phone, right? I mean, they're like the glue that holds your schedule together. They connect you to your work, your family, your friends, shopping, you know, everything that you need. So we're gonna see at Fashion Week what people are carrying to stay in touch.
CAROLYN GEH
What's in my purse? My BlackBerry.
HANNAH JOHNSON
I have an iPhone.
MILENA ILINA
I got my cell phone from Ukraine, and it's not BlackBerry. It's not iPhone. Fashion Week has been insane for me. I cannot keep in touch with my bookers all the time.
CAROLYN GEH
It's very, very important to be connected. You never want to miss a call from the agency.
SIGAIL CURRIE
Because casting changes so many times, fitting changes so many times, you need to be on the run whenever things change. And they need to reach you.
HANNAH JOHNSON
I'm on the iPhone side of the debate. It's good for e-mails from the agency and to look yourself up.
SELITA EBANKS
I Bing myself and this is Selita Ebanks naked, Selita's sex tape. How do you know I was naked or had a sex tape? I think this is hilarious but you only see those things on Bing, I guess, because they don’t exist anywhere else.
SIGAIL CURRIE
(SINGING) If you like it then you should've put a Bing on it. Oh, oh, oh.
CAROLYN GEH
Bing tells me the weather, local weather and local news. It's very good to stay in touch.
HANNAH JOHNSON
I quite like Skype so I can talk to people at home.
KATE SOMERS
I recently got a BlackBerry.
SIGAIL CURRIE
It's sort of filthy right now 'cause it has, like, makeup on it, I was just talking.
R'EL DADE
I got a cover for it.
KATE SOMERS
Because I can use it all over the world to stay in touch with my family. It's nice to hear their voices every once in a while.
MILENA ILINA
All my family is pretty worried about me and I cannot even, uh, text back.
R'EL DADE
I BBM all the time.
KATE SOMERS
BlackBerry Messenger, you know, free from one contact to the other. We like that.
CAROLYN GEH
Google Maps, I won't be able to survive without, especially since I'm new here in New York.
SIGAIL CURRIE
For example, I'm taking the train and I don't know what side is 8th Avenue. I would then look and then it would point me to the direction and then I would just go there. If I don’t have it then...
MILENA ILINA
After finishing all of my jobs, I promise to get new iPhone.
VERONICA WEBB
Time for another look at runway highlights. Well, fashion is leaving Bryant Park and headed uptown for Lincoln Center. Let's take a look at where we've been and where we're going. I am here with the pope of Bryant Park, Fern Mallis, senior VP of IMG fashion. It was Fern's idea actually to get fashion under one roof. And the first season of Bryant Park was because of Fern's idea. And now the last season at Bryant Park, Fern is still here.
FERN MALLIS
Amazing, isn't it? Eighteen years.
VERONICA WEBB
So how did it happen?
FERN MALLIS
Just as I was hired for my position at CFDA, Michael Kors had a show in an empty loft space on 24th Street. And when the music turned on, the ceiling started to come down. We live for fashion. We don’t want to die for it. So it was clear that something had to be done. It became a mission to centralize, modernize and organize the American runway shows. It was a real industry effort. We have to do this together to make it happen. The tents were very different than what they are now. Bryant Park was under renovation at the time.
VERONICA WEBB
So, so tell me some of the highlights from the last 18 years.
FERN MALLIS
Well, our, our buddy Isaac, I mean, doing the unzipped season. One of my favorites that I've been talking about a lot this week was the Bill Blass show when he retired. The whole backdrop was red, white and blue lights 'cause he was the dean of American fashion. It was the longest standing ovation. There wasn't a dry eye in the house.
VERONICA WEBB
And now, it's the last season. How do you feel?
FERN MALLIS
I'm very nostalgic about it. This is like the comfortable shoes. On the other hand, you know, fashion is about change.
VERONICA WEBB
Yes. And what are you looking forward to for Lincoln Center?
FERN MALLIS
Well, I'm looking forward to that newness and freshness and certainly being next to all the most incredible theaters and cultural institutions in, in one of New York's most iconic locations.
VERONICA WEBB
Well, there you have it, inventor of the tents, vice president of fashion at IMG. Thank you for the memories.
FERN MALLIS
Hi. This is Fern Mallis and you're watching Modelinia Fashion Week TV.
VERONICA WEBB
Hi, I'm Veronica Webb for Modelinia Fashion Week TV. I am here with Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, the new director of fashion at Lincoln Center. Hi, Stephanie.
STEPHANIE WINSTON WOLKOFF
Hi.
VERONICA WEBB
How are you?
STEPHANIE WINSTON WOLKOFF
Good. Thank you. Thank you for having me.
VERONICA WEBB
So, tell us about fashion at Lincoln Center. What's it gonna be like when it gets here?
STEPHANIE WINSTON WOLKOFF
It's going to be so exciting. Fashion week does have its exclusivity to a trade and to all the designers and to (STAMMERS) the people that do attend the socials. Um, however, Lincoln Center really stands for opening its arms to the people around and to the community as well. And so to make sure that Lincoln Center is not just about exclusivity, what we try and do, um, during fashion week is to open the, the doors around the tents, which will be in Damrosch Park or, um, fashion week, and to make sure that people feel welcome. For me, Lincoln Center is the epicenter of New York City.
STEPHANIE WINSTON WOLKOFF (CONTINUED)
And to be able to have everything in one place, fashion, arts, culturally, the synthesis of both, you know, (STAMMERS) for everyone it really is a, the unity of cultural synthesis of fashion are coming together here at Lincoln Center, it's just perfect.
VERONICA WEBB
Thank you, Stephanie Winston Wolkoff. It was a pleasure to have you and good luck at Lincoln Center. I'm gonna introduce you to one of nicest people I know. She's a beautiful woman, a great mother, a great friend. Her name is Elaine Irwin-Mellencamp.
ELAINE IRWIN-MELLENCAMP
The first time I ever had a picture published in a magazine was in Seventeen magazine, and bear in mind I was a teenager. So there's nothing better than the Seventeen magazine when you are a teen. Hi. My name is Elaine Irwin Mellencamp. I grew up in Pennsylvania in an extremely small town. And I didn't know about fashion at all. I came to New York and I might have just been 15. It was a good opportunity for me to learn about responsibility and take control of my own life and my own destiny. And from there, I moved to Paris and I did the Elite Model Look Of The Year contest and I lived in Europe and it was an amazing experience.
ELAINE IRWIN-MELLENCAMP
American Vogue was really, at the time, the top of the line, so it was time to come to New York. So I was so beside myself 'cause I was there and I was working for Vogue and I was working for Irving Penn that I kept going. They ended up using it for a cover and I have kind of like, like a half smirk and a smile, which wasn't at all what it was for, but it was just because couldn't help it. All day, so excited. I had never met anyone like John. I ended up doing this shoot and video, and I was there in literally like a little sheet draped on me.
ELAINE IRWIN-MELLENCAMP
And at one point in time, got up to dance in his music video, and it may have fallen off a little bit, so, you know, half the time I'm like holding it up and like, trying to be covered. So, I guess we got to know each other. (LAUGH) John has daughters. I kind of got involved with his kids and having a family and being part of a family, and I love that. And, uh, suddenly I found myself in Indiana and, and I realized that I'm living in Indiana. We've built a life for ourselves. We found a home and it kind of rooted here, so there I was in Indiana. Hi. I'm Elaine Irwin Mellencamp and you are watching Modelinia.
GILLES BENSIMON
If you remember the time where there was the supermodel, the greatest part was (STAMMERS) no one of them looked like the other. Cindy didn't look like Naomi. Christy, Kate don't look, uh, Linda. I mean, there was no, they were so different. All of them. My first camera I picked up, really, was a, a Brownie flash. It was like a box. I have three brothers and wanted to take one picture of my brother, a very specific picture. I take the picture and I don't think I use it again for a long time. I don’t like to look too much at my pictures. I don't even look at the magazine, those print.
GILLES BENSIMON (CONTINUED)
It was difficult for me. It was, it was always very difficult for me to look at the magazines. In, (STAMMERS) in fact, (STAMMERS) you know, I realize if I was looking in the past and back all the time, it would slow me down. Uh, that's my first pictures of my brothers. When, when I was younger, when I start, I try to decide before I shoot what I'm going to shoot. Now, perhaps, waiting a little more, you know, spend more time to watch. You, you try to use what you get. Sometimes (STAMMERS) something happens, Sometimes don’t happen. Also, the people you're working with are very important. The whole idea of the story was about, be freshly, excuse my French.
GILLES BENSIMON (CONTINUED)
The makeup, uh, the makeup artist tell me, I don't get it. She has to be more and need to (WORD?) we love this idea. It's more about the personality. Every time I have something to, to shoot, um, it's not that easy, I must say. I'm anxious about it, um, even I pretend to be different. Uh, that's why, you know, nobody has a recipe for the, these girls. There's some, some kind of mystery about it. I mean, they, they, they still look fantastic, I must say. Christy is amazing, Naomi, forever, Linda doing, I mean, they all doing incredible work. They, in fact, they, I think they were there always. But now we're rethinking about them a little more perhaps.
VERONICA WEBB
This is it. Thank you, Bryant Park. You've given us so much fun and so many wonderful memories. Wow. Okay, on to Lincoln Center and we'll see you again next season. I am very Veronica Webb for Modelinia Fashion Week TV.
